Hello, I need help with a cooling issue. (Me and everyone else?) I just replaced the radiator in my 1963 4/4 and added a thermostatically controlled electric fan mounted in front. At low speed the car is wonderfully cool but overheats at higher speeds. I am looking into an air dam that several people have written about and wonder if they are available anywhere for purchase? Better yet, does anyone know of an electric fan thin enough to fit behind the radiator? Thanks Perry mogowner@gmail.com

Perry, I fitted a cowl scoop to my plus 8 yesterday. You can buy a mild steel, black painted version from Morgan for £84 but I opted for the stainless steel version as it won't rust like the steel one. More expensive at £180 Inc vat and available from Heart of England Morgans: http://www.heartofenglandmorgans.co.uk and under bonnet fittings. It was a bit fiddly to fit (refitting the grill and mesh) but not difficult.

thanks for the heads up. 150 (about $225) plus shipping to USA is a bit pricey, I might try to do it here.

Perry, I too had a thermaostatically controlled fan (Kenlowe) in front of the rad on my 1967 4/4 and the cooling behaved like yours. I refitted the mechanical fan and threw out the thermostatical control. I now use the electrical fan only when the water gets reeal hot (100C+)by the switch.
Perhaps a daft question: have you checked if the fan turns the right way? Is it really pushing the air through the radiator and not trying to suck the air out of the engine bay? Kenlowes at least are built to work both ways and it is easy to get it wrong.

Yes thanks for the thought, I checked that too. It is drawing air the proper way. I am having great difficulty sourcing the fan though. There are none available in the States. Do you have a source over there?

If you are looking for the original fan (steel blades) fitted to the water pump pulley try an enquiry at http://www.smallfordspares.co.ukThe fan with plastic blades which fits on the same pulley should probably be available from Melvyn Rutter or the Morgan factory (the one for Ford Crossflows should fit). For electrical fans look at www.burtonpower.comGood luck! Frank

Are you sure that's it's actually overheating? A broken or badly earthed voltage regulator on the instruments can display exactly the same symptoms.

For my Plus 8 (different car I appreciate) I had a radiator specialist fit a multi core radiator (replaced the standard core, kept the top and bottom parts). These are typically used in racing, and since then no problems whatsoever with overheating....

My 66 Pre-Xflow had similar issues. Before I could investigate, I had replaced the Pre-Xflow with a Cosworth BDR. Part of my swap was a new alloy rad. and an electric fan.
Exactly the same overheating issues. I did install a MMC scoop and honestly it works!
Perry, try Morgan Spares in the US for price comparison on the scoop and Dave Bean Engineering for all Ford related stuff.
Since the problem went away, I never tried to seal the rad against the cowl...using scrap foam or whatever.
As far as the fan goes, try Advanced Auto. I got a really nice kit that I used on a GT-6. I didnt have to spend much on it.
