I have just taken delivery of a new 110 Roadster with the Factory 5 Link rear suspension. I am going to get a replacement tool tray fabricated to replace the useless cheepo plastic one fitted by the factory. The main issue with trying to maximise the available space is to know the amount of vertical travel that the axle/differential will make before it makes contact with the tray. At the moment I have allowed 50mm but its not that easy to determine whetehr thats enough. I know there will be plenty of opinion but is there anybody who has a reasonably informed view on what the maximum vertical movement will be?

I have a design for the 3l Roadster with cart spring suspension. I know the 3.7 has a bigger dif & no idea if the travel is the same.

I set Rog's bump assists at 45mm, now reduced to 38mm, John set his at 35mm.

Travel with leaf springs is probably 50mm from static to full deflection, but allow a bit more. Maybe 2.25". I think in inches.

My wooden tray was holed by the axle breather.

Hi Andy, I think I assumed a little more than the 50mm or so that DaveW suggested for leaf spring models when I designed my aluminium tool tray as shown below. In case its not obvious the top of the diff housing part of tray is flush with the mounting edges.



Main issue is clearance for outer ends of top links each side, particularly the bolt heads (see below). Measurements on mine revealed they were assymetric to the mounting surface so incorporated that in design such that deepest part of tray sits between their range of travel. Not surprising much later when fitting new rear coilovers, that the whole axle was found assymetric to the chassis by a similar amount (5mm). Easily corrected with panhard rod but alignment with rear arches needs to be considered as well.

As I needed to fit shorter anyway to avoid chaffing on rear wiring loom I sourced and fitted dome head socket bolts to outer end of top link mounts, as OE are 5mm too long. The dome head offers a tiny bit more clearance for tray.

I made a similar tray for my previous 3.0l leafspring roadster. This one will have alot more useable space

Andy, this was a mod done to accommodate the 5 link into my old alloy tray if it helps, ie JohnV6 drg will be the original design IIRC
