The filter units main purpose must be to regulate the pressure, as a filter after the injectors just seems to be wrong.....but it is a Morgan And that is why I changed mine to a separate filter and regulator system.

Thus, I was going to follow the replacement guide’s suggestion to clean and reuse the existing filter. I will have to see once I get the unit out. Just remember that the cleanliness of the fuel filter regulates the fuel pressure to the injectors. The dirtier it gets the lower the fuel pressure. I think HalfFull was referring to the sock type filter on the pump, as that was the one that was suggested could be re-used in the guide. The main fuel filter canister has an integral fuel pressure regulator that maintains 58 psi at the injectors. It isn't the cleanliness or restriction of the filter that regulates the pressure at the injectors. Yes, in this part of my response I was referring to the filter attached to the fuel pump. From the photos, it isn’t obvious that the new 90 degree angle filter that came with the installation kit would allow the assembly of the standoff unit. I may be wrong; I will find out when I do the job.

I tried a couple different types of plugs and it did not fix very long cranking but the new fuel lines from Emil it generally fires up with only minimal cranking.

I am not a mechanic in any way, shape, or form. Without the instructions at the beginning of this post, I would have been hard-pressed to tackle this project. But thank you to all who contribute here...I was able to do this today. Having been broken down 2 years ago with a dead pump— with warranty repair— I figured I would do preventive duty before getting stranded again. Not even a check engine light! I will say the hardest parts were: 1) not realizing that it is paramount to loosen the fuel filter canister in order to remove the forward-most fuel line from the pump assembly, and 2) dealing with the darn black plastic cover without breaking it. Once those tasks are done, the rest is quite simple. Thanks to you all!

HalfFull, did you purchase a fuel pump cover before starting anticipating breaking that cover? I would be tempted to do that purchase.

Stephen, I didn’t break it. Just dealing with gobs of silicone and not knowing it’s design so it was little by little. Now that I know the construction it is easy but going in blind, you don’t know exactly what you are dealing with.

Maybe I spoke too soon...
So installed the Walbro today. Everything fit and went well. Fired right up after cycling the pump a few times. Road tested about 30 minutes and ran great. Stopped to fill up the tank; nothing unusual, always 1 click and done, leave cap off a couple of minutes and she fired right up again and I drove home. Parked it temporarily in the garage (hot and humid) for a couple of hours. Went out to move it into a corner of my garage so as to fit my daily driver next to it. Fired up, but I was giving it minimal gas so as to be careful near a wall and stalled it in reverse. Would not restart. Pump sounds fine, I cycled it a couple of times and the engine would not start, just kept turning over. Battery is new and tended. I let it sit another hour, popped off the tank cap for a couple of minutes, checked all the hose connections and all good, no leaks. Even hit the reset button behind the tank just in case. Still just kept turning over, can hear fuel pump with turning the ignition. Any thoughts before pulling the whole pump out?

I'd check that there is pressure at the injectors via te Schrader Valve next to the Throttle Body. Clearly not when the engine is hot (I knows yours won't be...), so lots of rags as if you do have the requisite 58psi, then it will make its presence known. My suspicion is that you don't have fuel pressure, as nothing else in the magic triangle has changed (Air, Fuel, Ignitiion). If there is no pressure, then it sounds as though the in-tank pick-up hose from tyhe replacement pump might have becoime detatched from one end or another. This has happened before with others, where the hose clamps have not been sufficiently tight.
