Having gone way off topic on another thread, with a discussion about number plates, I’ve opened this thread to carry on that subject.
I have an interest in number plates, especially those issued before the prefix or suffix plates were issued,
My own 2003 4/4 now has a 1958 Devon plate attached. (YDV 819) I really like the local connection.
The son of the original owner of the plate, provided me with some background history. This led me to find information on the original Exeter Austin dealer. The plate came from an Austin A35.

I had a 1938 Norton with Dudley numberplate on it. It even had the dealer brass plate attached to the mudguard. I have to admit I wish I had an old plate.

I did buy S800 MOG when I first bought Stanley. But I sold it a few years later.

I wish it was possible to look at the history of private plates, all the cars they were registered to through the years

I wish it was possible to look at the history of private plates, all the cars they were registered to through the years Someone at the DVLA probably can You used to be able to request (for a fee) the ownership history of a classic, but that's been stopped because of GDPR, it used to include details of if the Reg had been changed

Don't the DVLA just make them up to sell them at their regular auctions like the Bank of England print new notes?

Useful website for early vehicie registration number codes here, I have it bookmarked. The "ZO" prefix of the 1952 MGTD reg which initiated this thread is explained on the bottom of this page, which suggests it's registration concurs with date of manufacture so likely original.

I tried to get 333 GO last month on the DVLA auction site, whomever it was, was considerably richer than yow (said in a Brummie accent-Harry Enfield) I bailed out when it got to a grand. Gutted...
