Mr Microsoft has kindly updated my interent browser AKA edge. It now has lots of annoying features & the best yet it has lost my latest favourites preferring instead the older ones I imported to this pc 9 months ago. i can't find the newer ones so am rebuilding things.

I used Microsoft operating systems all my career, but switched to Apple products at home about 15 years ago. Now I am completely p*ss*d off with Apple, forcing one to upgrade in order to stay within the ecosystem and gradually shifting oS components into chargeable models - for example, you used to be able to keep your entire music librayr on the cloud and sync your phone with it, now you have to have an Apple Music account.
They are also withdrawing support for my laptop, claiming that it's too old so to stay with the OS in future I'm goign to have to shell out £3k+ on a new computer.
Sod that, I shall be going back to Windows next time.

I have W10 and have slowly “customised” it re favourites and software. I use Open Office instead of Microsoft Office. I did buy Office for students when jnr went to uni as it was then a cheap offer. I may load it to see how it goes. Trouble is the W10 office opens as a default unless opening from Open Office itself. Something to play with to sort out. Doesanyone know if it is possible to block Microsoft pre installed Office?

Apple no longer supports any 32 bit processor. So if, like me, you have a 2011 machine with a 32bit processor, there are no more updates that isn't a problem: it still works as well as ever, there is no need to replace it. Apple Music still keeps everything on the Cloud, with Catalina, iTunes was replaced with three separate apps for music, podcasts and shows or movies. Same on the phone. What is the problem?

I am also pi**ed with 🍏. Latest upgrade did not bring any positive changes but a lot of troubles. While 🍏 once was an user friendly system it gets more and more tricky for a simple "user".
Can only recommend to stay away from Catalina

I have a Windows Asus PC that I purchased just at the time that Windows 10 became available. Other than upgrading the RAM and upgrading the hard disk twice, most recently with an SSD I have done nothing to it and never had any problems. I do not use MS programs other than the operating system and use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird plus LibreOffice instead of the equivalent MS products. It has always performed well and within expectations. I saw the new MS browser update but don't use it. Alis's Macbook Pro, which was purchased at about the same time has also had updates of RAM and disk (thanks for the advice from TM members ) but it crashes every so often and despite the upgrades often seems slow to respond. To be honest it was purchased more on aesthetic grounds than for any technical reason and is not used for any purpose that would not be handled quite adequately by any other notebook type PC. One thing I can say is that the battery has lasted well but I think it is now due for replacement. Now there is a wealth of choice of good looking slim notebooks on the market but I suspect that when it comes to replacing Macbbook it will be another Apple. I had a small need for a portable Windows notebook but wanted something that was not going to cost a lot. I have ordered a Notebook/Flexbook that has a 13.3" touch screen (can be used like a tablet), keyboard, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 32GB Flash, Intel CeleronTM 2.4GHz, structure in aluminium. Cost €330. If it does what I want for the price I will be well satisfied.

My 2012 Macbook Pro has got a 2.7GHz quad-core i7, 16GB RAM, a 500GB SSD and a 2880 x 1800 retina display. There is no reason at all why it can't run 10.16 Big Sur but apparently Apple have decided that I must buy a new machine if I want to stay in the supported ecosystem. Catalina is the problem with the switch to Apple Music from iTunes it no longer supports cloud-based synching without a Music account. Plus there's the well-documented heat issue. The OS seems to be rigged to run older processors hot, mine is now rarely below 70C. I could go back to 10.14 I suppose but that will drop out of support in a couple of years. There's a lot of pressure on Apple at the moment so we might see a change of heart, but I doubt it.

Having used Word and Excel day in and day out pretty much solidly since they came out in the early 1990's I am a big fan of the Office suite and am very happy to pay the annual 365 subscription, I vastly prefer them to the Apple alternatives (Numbers and Pages). I did have a look at Libre Office and to be frank it was like using 25-year old software, I disliked it intensely, it just seemed so clunky and lacking in functionality.
