Looks very good Richard; its not the hour or so it took to make you're paying for, but the lifetime of experience and know how, as well as keeping the tradition alive👍👏 Absolutely these skills are priceless and we do our best to support the local one's whenever we can. Ruby HurdlesWhat a lovely looking panel though, doesn’t seem expensive for real crafting skills. It’s only a tank of fuel after all (that’s often how I justify spends to myself ;-))
BR Colin You are right I'm always comfortable paying for quality and keeping the skills alive, the tankful is a very good comparison and I'll adopt that one if I may. The price of the two post I got from Mole Valley Farmers is a laughable contrast though, Shield Stake 1800 X 85 £10-20 inc Vat for the pair with a 15 year warranty and they are guaranteed not to leech any nasty preservatives into the ground. I was relieved to read they were from sustainable sources quite how they do it for that price I don't understand.

About 15 years ago wife and I spent two days building a panel like that from a willow tree we had n the garden to make a wind brake...silly but we felt very proud of it.

And so you should be, they are a work of art and the beauty of it for us is that it is SW facing where our big blows come from so it will spill the wind is the plan and not get blown over.

We had a field hedge at the end of our garden in Paignton. My Grandad showed me how you make a natural hedge by partly cutting them with a bull hook & bending the boughs. Sadly a skill that is now rapidly declining.

A number of the country type fairs have hedging competitions - most of the ploughing marches around here certainly do

That's a priceless experience John watching old craftsmen in action. Our Tower Captains son had finished university and was looking around for a job on the land and got a deal with the NT at Coleton Fishacre. This was just what he was after and they taught him proper traditional hedge laying, copiccing, dry stone walling and a whole rake of traditional skills, they have specialist around the country that they send them to and it was very encouraging to hear of their investment in this way.
He is a lovely chap and has Apsbergers so it has been very uphill for him to attain a degree and unfortunately the NT apprentice scheme was for a limited period which has now expired, last I heard prior to lockdown he was still looking for a job. I'm sure he'll find one he is a charming young man and built like a fast train.

Yep there are pockets of these skills but most farmers can't afford it & use the tractor hedge cutter instead.

Not necessarily bodged up today, because it has been a long time coming. And I'm certainly hoping the surgeon didn't bodge it up! Partial knee replacement using the Mako robotic system. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2020/07/18/IMG_20200718_075531.jpg)
