I was taken around the club circuit at Silverstone in July 2012 by a factory test driver in the very same Gulf liveried car. It did indeed have the Suplex dampers and a lower ride height. The handling was light years ahead of the car I bought in Feb. 13 and was almost keeping up with some Lotus Elises that were circulating at the same time. I have fitted the Spax adjustable dampers, Empire wishbone kit and lowered the ride height to the original design ride height to get the handling back to where it should have been in the first place. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2020/07/16/IMG_0375.jpg)

Did did they change anything at the rear as well?

Nick, Dan & Peter at SSL (formally Suplex) did a lot of development work on the 3W setup & are most helpful if you try them

As I understand it only a very few early cars from 2012 had the Suplex damper set up and all the pre production ones. All the others came with the black Spax ones as standard and a 40mm ride height increase.

I think mine has Spax front dampers, so I guess that answers that question then! What is the main difference handling wise, be interesting to know what needs changing if it was worse when they changed it..

My old Banner battery just replaced with Yuasa had plastic flaps that cover the terminals. I'd ask for them or at least arrange a cove over the positive terminal to avoid any sparks from fumbled metallic objects. I will keep a lookout for something - do they come with anything as standard? You can see the platic covers in the photo here https://www.bannerbatterien.com/en/Products/Starter-Batteries/Starting-Bull/74-530-30#The terminal adapters seem expensive for 4 bolts & 2 copper angles

The 40mm increase in ride height upset the handling and created massive amounts of bump steer as they did not alter the position of the track rods to compensate for it. Hence the "comfort kit" being available to address the problem. I measured the bump steer on my car after it tried killing me more than once at 0.875" over 1" of bump and 1" of droop. I would class anything over 0.010" as too much.
By dropping it by 40mm to 100mm ground clearance at the front and 110mm at the rear it restored the suspension geometry to how it was designed.
This results in beautifully weighted steering and stops the car deviating from the chosen line when hitting pot holes or man hole covers. Before, I could find myself on the opposite side of the road or heading for a wall at speed, weather I liked it or not. The bump setter was so violent it would rip the steering wheel from my hands, now I can steer with just one finger and thumb.

Advice please - I am about to fit Ohlins front and rear to mine (end-2016, so without the early models' suspension geometry). Would you recommend that I drop the ride height; and by how much?

I would aim for the existing ride height and go from there. You can always tweak it later if you feel the need.
