I can recommend hMailServer Peter. It can handle multiple domains with a lot of flexibility.

We are actually on the Island of Elba at the moment. I'm keeping my Anglo-Saxon skin out of the midday sun and we are having a wonderful relaxed time. We weren't even sure we were going to be able to come (booked before the lockdown) but in the last few weeks things have loosened up enough but we are still taking precautions seriously.




Anyway, to get back to the topic, I remembered that this trick was also possible with Samsung. I just tried connecting the Samsung tablet to the Samsung phone and it did work but it does seem to require a good WiFi or 4G connection to give good results. Here both are a little slow but I am sure that it would be fine at home. There may be some way of connecting via an app using Bluetooth and I believe it can be done via the Google account too. I might leave them connected for a while and see if I find it useful.

Our home VDSL modem is a Fritzbox and I can use it to make calls over the net from my mobile phone, including to the individual internal handsets. I also get notified of missed calls and voice messages on our home phone number.

Well if the Interweb is a bit slow there I would have no issue with that as it gives you time to enjoy everything not happening in a more relaxed manner, looks lovely.

(p.s. now Sony tablet and LG or Huawei phone. Of course the joke that you don't need to as the Huawei phone is actually listening to and recording the phone call still stands....)

Basically the US government's position is that it is OK for MS, Google, Amazon, Facebook etc. to collect and store your data but that if Huawei does it it is a threat to national security. Of course this has nothing to do with the US - China trade war.

Given that it has forced Huawei to move to alternative suppliers and develop their own systems has not been viewed in a good light by the US campanies who have, and will, loose substantial amounts of business because of the bans.

Huawei has overhauled Apple and is now close behind Samsung, the world leader in smart phones. It also seems to me that Huawei is the leader in 4G technology at the moment. With all the scrutiny that they will come under following US accusations they will have to be very clever indeed to present any security threat because of installation of their equipment.

You are absolutely right, self-interest, bias and perception makes for odd statistics. Thats without the numbers for the sales in China being taken into account in many cases. The numbers sold there are huge on there own.

I have been playing with the new toy for a few days now and right at the moment I am completely reinstating the Windows system.

I am more than a bit peed off with MS at the moment. The way it was set up originally was that all user files and data were automatically backed up to or stored on OneDrive. This would not be a huge problem except for the fact that we are working on a 4G Wi-Fi modem on a 50 GB annual data plan (normally fine while we are on holidays). Also I have now realised that some Microsoft apps now seem Software as a Service type apps that require internet access. One way or another a fair bit of data has been chewed up. In trying to block all references to OneDrive I seem to have lost nothing important but in the end I decided to do a complete reset. When I set it up again I will use my Android tablet as a Wi-Fi access point because it is attached to a plan that allows unlimited data access. I am also setting it up to function off line. I will see how that works.

All this is making me think tha Linux is perhaps a better option and I will make a bootable USB key to see if Linux will work on it.

As I was writing this Windows was reinstalling itself and setting it up to function off line seems to have functioned to get rid of One Drive and I deleted the One Drive app and several others I don't want from the system. I will now re-install my software.

Peter a couple of things you don't mention but given your experiece you may have already considered?

Deleting the OneDrive from the machine has still left all your content on the Fluffy Cloud and so liable to copy etc if you/they are hacked. You may want to go in through the Cloud interface and delete it or leave it as an archive?

What you outline are two slightly different things ? Windows 10 is the O/S and can you imagine the trouble you have had doing that using WinXP a few years ago. They have at least made the BSOD and reinstall a lot easier which is probably based on a lot of feedback 8)

OneDrive is part of the MS account, same as iCloud Drive is for Apple etc. Along with Office365 this is part of the productivity suite and they are now trying to make everything Cloud. Primarily so they can get you on a monthly charge but also so that everthing is accessible across the 20 devices they thing everyone carries now. Which is at least a little more useful.

if you are able to delete the new browser Edge from your system you will be a god, do share!

In the early days of W10 I had an ongoing problem with the system updating. When it did so I lost my printer which was an old Canon and Canon had refused to update the drivers. I tried to stop auto updates but failed until I talked to Windows tec help and he told me to set the W10 system as if I was using dial up. It doent stop you using the normal high speed internet when you tell the machine to do so but it does stop the data heavy auto processes built into W10.

Might be worth trying as a way of contiolling the cloud link. certainly my W10 PC doesnt upload to the MS cloud and I have done nothing else to stop it doing so.

As for Edge, just load up Firefox and make it default.

Their business model is PIA. Would you let MMC send an update to your say T16 engined plus 4 to say you need to move to a plus four as your car can't take the latest ECU upgrade.

What was adequate for most tech i& would work for decades is being deliberately upgraded to ensure obsolescence & the death of the planet.

They are all going to get more creative with the pressure on the business. This might get interesting.
