now retired I can live with clunky as it is free & works. I use simple spreadsheets & very very rarely write a letter.
Each to their own.

It’s a sign of getting old John. If you were young you would have to have the latest and be pleased to pay for it. I only pay when my old stuff gets too hard / slow and there is nothing free available.

I also hate giving my data to Facebook

Coincidentally I also moved to Mac with a similar spec MBP (2012, but pre-Retina, i7, 16Gb and 500gb SSD as you could DIY upgrade these). But it would be foolish to upgrade a Mac today with the new ARM chip support imminent.... maybe in 18 months!

Interestingly MSFT seems to be doing well with Win 10 support for old PCs. I just updated an old Vista machine (2009? 3Gb RAM, Pentium 2-core...) to Win 10. Apart from the sound and network card being out of (driver) support, it works fine... must put it up on freegle...

Also just been reading about folks getting Win10 running on a Raspberry Pi4! They are trying to get past the somewhat limiting 1Gb RAM limit for their ARM Win10 support. Then again the 4 or 8Gb version is all anyone needs (running Linux anyway) for email, web browsing etc.

While Edge has downloaded to a couple of my W7 PCs IE, which I rarely, use is still functioning on both.

I am pleased everyone else is having the same issues as me, yep edge tried to upgrade me the other day, I thought I had managed to stop it, but more than lightly it is hovering in the back ground.

I could have written the above word for word and like Gambalunga, I have never had a problem with W10 and MS. From what I have read elsewhere, most difficulties seem to be with computers where the system was updated from W7 or similar. And some of the MS applications are the pits - Outlook for example - so I use free apps like Firefox, Thunderbird and Libre Office..

I get wore "funnies" on my Iphone and more still on an Android tablet.

Apple are moving hardware once again, it'll be interesting to see if they support 2 versions of hardware with their system, instead of encouraging people to move platform that will enable users to make use of the latest features.

But I have older no longer supported systems also, they still work, I am not sure why people feel the need to upgrade for continued support, this is the danger of cloud based/tied systems they can lock you out if they wish in the goal of achieving more sales to allow you access to your data which you entrusted to a manufacturer to always allow you to use.

It doesn't work like that in their eyes the world is about subscribing and paying. One way or another.

This is why I always buy a hard copy of music or have local storage of any hires music downloads, it's mine I won't be held back from accessing it by some corporation.

Think of photo hosting services how many of those have gone behind a paywall or the likes of fotopic went away altogether?

I had the Edge update a couple of weeks ago, I tried it for a while and found it an improvement over the previous incarnation and seemed to be faster than Chrome. The downside is that it based around Bing for searching and maps, and of course, isn't synchronised with my Android devices, so I've now returned to Chrome. Like others, I've used Windows 10 since it came out and have no real issues with it.

I would never use Apple products, they are enormously overpriced. I have experimented with a Linux distribution (Mint) on an old PC and was very impressed, I might consider it for my main machine at some future date. I saw on the lunchtime news an organisation distributing refurbished laptops to families who don't have them and I noticed they were fitting them with SSD drives preloaded with Mint.

I think I use a bit of everything now.

My two big desktops (office and home) are Windows 10 and it has been generally excellent, especially compared to Win7/Vista/XP. If you want to do strange things (lots of screens and memory) it is far easier as the range of support for extras like multi-port video boards is in a different league. They have eroded a lot of the stability benefit that Apple had over Windows in the old days.

I do however still love the iPhone/iPad/Mac combo for portable computing. The cross access of content and applications is brilliant (ability to answer a call on your iPad or Mac when your iPhone is in the other room etc) among other things.

I even have a RasberryPi running some nerd things and a box using Linux now. There is hope for open systems yet.

I am a great fan of Linux, and I too have tried Mint. If it were not for the requirement of Windows for some programs that I use I would switch to Linux. I suppose I could always use Wine to run the one or two applications that I have that do not run on Linux but it doesn't seem worth the effort to switch when Windows itself is working well for me.

For anyone who is not familiar with Linux it is a good alternative to put on an older computer that is still working well and that you only use for email, browsing, and office apps like Word processing and spreadsheets.

I do agree that LibreOffice can seem a little out of date and I find the search and replace function for special characters a little clunky but in general terms it too does everything I want.

I recently switched mail server to save a little money on my now seldom used Australian email and I was very annoyed to discover it was an MS Exchange system which has somehow forced me into an MS environment which I have no desire to be part of. I will be investigating alternatives when the current contract expires. In fact now that I think about it I will probably switch to mail forwarding and remove the account from all my devices.
