Interesting set up there. Pressure regulator too?

Hi Bruce, thanks for your comments. Interesting whether the improvement is down to the K& N free flow filter or the cold air tube - probably both, but I wonder whether the length and routing of the convoluted tube is any less restrictive than the trumpet. I may try a half way house with a K & N inside the canister to replace the paper element if there is a noticeable loss of performance.

I can't answer scientifically your assumption regarding airflow through the tube but from observation of dust and grit collecting in the canister after driving through the desert then the airflow is considerable, I use a racing rain sock to keep the filter clean. The issue with the trumpet being in the engine compartment as well as restriction is hot air being drawn in.

Like Les , I cannot recommend going back to the original canister air filter system.
My results were not as spectacular as his, but the best I could do with the original system was 148 bhp , which rose to 186 bhp with the JR cone filter and Mark Adams chip.
I even tried replacing the filter element with a K&N part , but the difference was only minimal. The engine needs to breathe, what is OK for a low-revving 4x4 weighing upwards of 2000 kilos is not really suitable for a sports car weighing half that.
I am also not a big fan of the foam core type units (but the racers like them) , mine was a simple conversion using the existing brackets and rubber mounting of the cylinder. You need to keep the element clean, and re-oiled , so i just build that into my annual maintenance schedule. I have had mine for almost 18 years now and it still looks a fitting addition to the engine bay. Yes it would be better to ensure that it only took in cold air, but that involves a lot more thought, more truncking and something else filling an already crowded under bonnet area.

I doubt that water coming into the air feed pipe would be a problem. When I had a ‘93 4/4 the intake was from the wheel arch via a flexi pipe that fitted over a steel pipe through the inner wing. It was about 18” above ground level so would need a deep water ford to be under water! I did have to replace and insulate the flexi though as even with the stock heat shield the exhaust manifold heat was melting it. I have a nagging in the back of my mind to get a cold air feed for my Plus8 as tests have shown the air it sucks in gets quite hot. At least 20deg above ambient air. The surface of the stainless filter box with a K&N filter I have was measured at over 50deg C last time I tested, ambient was 15deg. Colder air would give a sharper response probably. I think the rule of thumb is +1bhp per 7deg lower temp. I fitted rear bonnet catch extenders to help get the hot air out but not done tests yet. I THINK they help as the rad fan doesn’t cut in quite as much, possibly due to easier air flow through the rad.

You don't need much water to destroy an engine. It doesn't compress. I tried a similar intake on my T16 +4 but decided the gain was minimal vs the risk

Hm, I'm ploughing a lonely furrow here! However I will plough on and report back with a subjective view when I have changed the filter. I do have to say though, torque rather than outright bhp is my thing.

I've done the same, ditched the stainless trumpet in favour of now a K&N, previously just a budget cone filter. Better breathing engine =better throttle response. I perceive increased torque, feels quicker\more grunt, and surprisingly better mpg. Getting the air from cooler area is next goal, as obviously its hot round the engine, but my pickup is in the same place roughly as the original paper element housing.

Swapped my SU's for a four barrel Edelbrock carburettor on my 1980 Plus 8. That allows for a nice big pancake chrome filter housing with a 10 inch K&N filter. Lots of clearance. https://www.gooze.com/1501/1208-Ede...hzsPb6gIVmKztCh2x7wANEAQYASABEgK9X_D_BwE
