As I am about to take my GDI Plus 4 in for a service and MOT tomorrow I decided to check the contents of the catch can I fitted about a year ago. Absolutely nothing was in there, not even any moisture.I really don't know if this is a good thing or my particular catch can is not up to scratch.
I know a few of you have fitted catch cans and wonder what your experience is.

How is the catch tank vented?

Why would you need one anyway?

Because the GDI engines don't wash the ports with fuel, any crankcase oil that goes up the breather can clag up the back of the back of the valves .

We've gone back to the days of engines needing a decoke at low miles.....

doh

I thought the Duratec in our plus four was a pearler of an engine you could really wind it up and gave a regular 36 to 38 mpg the Gdi felt a bit rough at the top end and one of our Taffmoggers always had soot around the exhaust. I now know the reason why, one of the last galve chasis cars with a duratec seems a good bet if someone is looking pre loved.

The AR flash greatly improves revving higher up the range and significantly reduces the sooty exhaust. The difference is significant.

Any upgrade is good Dave but that particular one come's at a cost and it can't adress the crank case breather issue.

If the plumbing is such that the fumes have an uphill travel, is it possible that they condense on the inner walls of the piping and run back from whence they came, before reaching the can?

Good point Doug, I'll have a go at re-routing the hoses.

Athelstan ..... I think the oil condensing and returning to the sump is a good thing, before you re-route your pipes .... catch can is a bit like a fire extinguisher .... nice to have it for peace of mind (and a requirement for racing) but you don't really want to use it if possible. smile

One of the lads I was on the spanners for a couple of years ago ran a 2.1 Pinto which was absolutely shagged but still knocked the power out. It breathed a bit heavy though probably half a pint on a stage

The queue for a stage start saw the co driver get out, open the bonnet, remove the catch tank, open the boot, tip the oil back into the dry sump tank, refit the catch tank and close the bonnet, whack the pins back in and get in ready for the stage start!
