Voltage regulator strikes again. Looks like you are getting intermittent charging so the battery voltage is gradually diminishing.

This is very common, I think most owners seem to have had this problem at some time or another. Although since MMC repositioned the rectifier to the chassis there seem to have been less failures.

Swapping the Cycle Electric rectifier for the Harley one is the way to go. A lot more reliable but I have had one of those fail as well.

Lightspeed have you checked the earth connection on the rectifier? If all good & would have expected the voltage to rise to over 14 with a few revs on right after start. Perhaps get the HD rectifier whilst at it as it sounds more like a charging problem rather than battery.

I will check the earth connection and order the better rectifier as well. The system going bad after 2600 miles amazes me.

one thing I have found with glass mat batteries is that if they get run down, they never recover very well

I found the culprit. Not sure the cause but it for sure stops the charging ability of the battery. Low water. Top of plates starting to show! My bad for not looking sooner, embarrassing. I should have been looking...

Added water and is charging now and we will see how long it will hold a charge.

New battery ordered. Going to order a Rectifier just to have in the shop.

Thanks everyone. The new 400 cca battery cranks mightily and when the beast deigns to bless me with a start up it charges along at 14.4. Not sure what Lightspeed means by 2600 miles.. I'm at 18,000. Rectifier and ground seem reliable. I begin to search now for someone with more electronic savvy than I to interrogate the ECU. My thanks again to all.

There was 2600 miles on the battery and it was dry enough to expose plates.

The Battery is a Deka GTX. It's a sealed unit.

Does it have the through bolt lugs for cable connection? Or is it a rather wimpy 1/4" bolt that screws into the unknown metal of the lug?
