Out of interest, does your fuel gauge fluctuate between empty to quarter full or is it just mine?

I can go from confident to nervous in the blink of an eye.

Yup,my Aero Plus 8 has done that since new. I raised the matter at the first service but the chaps at Williams couldn't sort it and the factory pretty much said 'they all do that' so I too would be interested to know if anyone has found a solution.

The S2 has a bit of a wobble but not bad.

When the Coupe came it had a wobble that could cover half the range. They were able to damp it quite significantly. Now when you fill it from near empty it showed 75% for a good 10 miles before it went to near full. Not certain what they did but it made a big difference.

The SS is terrible and when filled shows 3/4 full. After that it just goes all over the place and the only way to master it is when it goes to orange warning then its down to around 80 miles. Its been back to factory and dealers and all give up and the old "they all do that" comes out!

Mine certainly had the St Vitus' Dance - from new. I could be sitting still at traffic lights and it would be all over the place...

And then it stopped working all together.

Bell & Colvill fitted a replacement part - the tube thing (sorry for the high tech description for those who might have lost me) and now it's actually pretty accurate. It doesn't wander and is accurate. It will move when going around corners swiftly - but other than that it's fine.

So it is fixable. Was in my case.

I get very irritated by that phrase. It is offered as a jokey throw-away line and we are supposed to be satisfied. These are increasingly expensive cars and, as we all know, dealer maintenance is also very pricey. We deserve better. But to answer the question - as you see below, mine is a humble (but beautiful) Plus 4. When the tank is full the gauge registers just below full, and I fill up again when it falls to half, so I don't know what happens below that. But I suspect it is not fully accurate.

And whilst I'm on gauges, why is it the temperature gauge varies between 80 and 100 degrees? My tin top doesn't do that and, come to think of it, none of my cars (except in 1968 with a Ford 100E) has the temperature ever varied from "normal". I'd have thought that with an efficient radiator (mine is new), loads of inny and outty louvres and with an established-pedigree Smith Industries gauge the engine ought to be better maintained at a consistent indicated temperature.

Voltage stabilisation perhaps, there is an aftermarket gismo that will cure your fuel gauge, but, you need to be a bit vehicle electrics savvy to fit and calibrate

I have been told the reason they vary in temp between 80 and 100 deg (and this is on the Aero) is that in summer it runs at 80 and winter its 100 and this is for the engine management - or something like that!

For comparison, the Plus Four fuel gauge is fairly steady and I can get to Scarborough and back on half a tank. But on the same trip in the Aero, she likes a drink and on the return journey it was down to a quarter with thirty miles still to go and thought surely I can get to the friggin east coast and back on a full tank, but bottled it just past York due to the Geiger counter nerves and had to refill.

Mine (Aero8 S1) is more pessimistic than the reality .

The gauge can show under a quarter of fuel but in reality you only refill 25L of fuel to be full and could stay under the minimum (with around 15L of fuel in the tank !).
