I went to take the little beasty out of the garage today after a rather longer period than usual. It lives on a small trickle charger which was showing solid green.

All I get is a click-click on the starter button. All the lights are good and the various buttons result in the usual range of noises.

I push it out of the garage and bump start it and it runs fine. Whilst coasting I kill the engine and try to restart and get the same click. Bump start again and it continues to run.

I put it on the fast charger/starter unit and it still does not want to play. I gave all the battery connections a good twist and they are tight.

I guess this means getting the motor connections all checked and if not replacing the starter ?

Starter solenoid and relay would be where I'd look first, having checked the battery connections.

Bit of a well know problem if its a S1??

The Gel battery can show green on a trickle charger but actually be dead.. (annonying) It just doesn't hold the charge but shows the capacity.

The worst case is the starter is on it's way out. As it needs absolutely the maximum cranking amps from a healthy battery to turn the starter over.

Worth taking the battery to a battery specialist before pulling the starter. They will very quickly tell you if it's goosed...

The battery is an almost new one last year and has been on a charger whenever it is in the garage. It is the uprated model from standard !

I suspect another visit to RCT is going to be involved.

It is about due the annual inspection anyway.

BTW.. you can get to the starter without having to take the engine out. You can take the engine bay floor off.... quicker... hence cheaper.

We've done quite a few this way.. we're only up the road in High Wycombe if you get stuck.

Its would almost have to be a POOR earth on the battery,
Remove the cables, clean posts and coat in Vaseline and reconnect.
Also the earth connection on the other end of the earth strap.

I'd agree with Graham re getting the battery checked. Try using a heavy discharge meter ( As Cereal says, the starter circuit puts probably the heaviest drain of all on the battery and a HDM is about the onl;y way you will replicate that

sounds like a dead battery.
I've found that a heavier duty charger is the only reliable way to keep an Aero topped up. That or running it regularly!
