Mrs H3 asked me a question, and I was unable to give her a precise reply: Why wings on the Morgan logo? My reply was "because it's nice", but perhaps it's not enough.

An interesting question H, I guess the wings are meant to signify speed and reflected the brave and exciting world of flying of that time. Perhaps the most famous set of wings (  ) are Bentley's, but of course they came much later than Morgan's. Aston Martin also has a winged logo, as did Invicta from memory and I think Lagonda. Both BMW and Spyker had propeller logos, which also signify their aeronautical connection, though Bentley also started off making engines for planes. Austin-Healey and Mini were much later users of wings and I know there are other marques, such as Chrysler who used wings, though they changed to a Penta logo! I think the origins of the logo is a question that should be put to Charles (Morgan) and I'm sure Simon will do that when he returns from his hols.

As Brian says, the 'wings' theme was very widely used in the ealier days of motoring. This often took different guises For example, Hispano Suiza used the flying stork mascot. I have a recollection that this was somehow tied up with Georges Guynemer, the French fighter pilot whose squadron was in fact named ' Les Cigognes' and whose SPAD planes used the Hispano engine but I'm not sure if the car maker adopted the mascot before or after he used it. No doubt someone on here will be able to clarify? Cheers, G

I'm happy to see that my question is not an easy one. When Mrs H3 asked me this question yesterday, I replied about the cross in the logo, which seems to me a reference to the HFS' father's job. But, well, she noticed it was a "sideway reply" and I got a cold dinner...

I think it has something with prices soaring. Well. Bentley and Aston Logos use Outstretched Bird Wings so there could be some truth in that. The Traditional Morgan Wings (not that 'Soaring' Straight Winged New Version) on the other hand, tend to be 'Fluttering' Wings, keeping the marque up just high enough to make them All still affordable .

If Morgan had wings right from the start, it wasn't long after the Wright brothers first flight. And lets be honest, planes were not fast at that time, so I'm guessing that it's more about speed and the birds. eg Peregrine Falcon.
