Remember we used to climb up the drain pipe onto the school 2nd floor flat roof out of hours .... the dare was to run along the roof and launch into an adjacent tree like a squirrel .... got it wrong one time and dived sideways into the old-fashioned wire reinforced skylight .... split my head open and bled like a stuck pig .... had to climb back down the drainpipe and walk home with the blood running down into my boot ... stomp, squelch, stomp, squelch .... told my patents a yarn as to how it happened and got hauled off to the hospital for stitches .... still got the scar

Just brought back memories of my mother doing exactly that. I'll remind her next week when we can hopefully get together for her 99th birthday. We live 200 miles apart but are hoping for a garden celebration in Sheringham.

Ask her if she knew Ruby and Brian Pigott they used to own and run a hardware store and china shop in the town before they retired, they were Heather's godparents/auntie.

Slightly off-thread now but sounds like the hardware store was Blythe and Wrights: one of the best in the land and much lauded by Bill Bryson when he stayed in Sheringham. Mum and Dad were Morgan owners and members of FolkMog before Dad died in 2011. I am hoping to take Mum for a ride in mine at some stage soon as she still thinks that they are the only cars worth owning!

Rob that would be the one they had run it since they got married in their early twenties.

Nice bit of Morgan history there then, sorry to hear about your Dad though I lost mine a great many years ago.

Lovely your Mum is keen and I hope you get the chance to take her out in the Morgan sometime before she gets her telegram. Heather's Mum (Ruby's sister) loved my Morgan and one day we were into three figures and she said oh this is exciting I really feel alive, bless her she passed away in February this year after a very good life.

Back on thread, I don't think anyone has mentioned those fabulous appliances in parks and recreation grounds. Can't remember their names now but the 'umbrella' was one of the best, especially when overloaded with kids spinning it as fast as they could - and rocking at the same time. Being flung off one of the two types of roundabout was also fun! No soft landings then either - just solid concrete.

We had a 'Witches Hat' as we used to call it, on a small play area opposite our secondary school. At lunchtimes you'd challenge other students- you had to hang off the inside and try and kick your opponent off, while others we spinning and rocking it. I think the principle was later used in Mad Max Thunderdome

Flying control-line model aircraft in Greenwich Park (pre radio-control days). Just went round in a circle. Our record was 5 planes flying in the same circle before disaster struck and we trudged home to re-build them.

Oh how I aspired to/lusted after one of those.
