Folks, some interesting behaviour from my 2002 Plus8. If I fill the fuel tank up to the brim, for the first couple of miles she stutters as if there were intermittent episodes of fuel starvation. Does anybody have an idea what causes this and how to make it go away? Help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Rick

Rick, It's probably because you've overfilled it. Try just filling to the first click and hopefully it should be ok.

I've read something about overfilling the tank and contaminating the charcoal filter this could be a possible cause. That's a bit random but I read it on a Morgan forum somewhere. I never top my Plus 8 right up as I'm cautious with the paintwork.

Similar misfiring issues on M3W 5 speeders with MIL light coming on temporarily as well. Both usually clear as fuel is burnt off. Can't remember if its a fuel venting or pressure issue, but manuals do advise avoiding over filling.

Yes, I get that on my M3W. The trick is to pay at the kiosk, not at the pump, and leave the cap off until you return. It gives the tanks time to vent and if there is any spluttering it should go quickly.

Thanks for the quick response folks. I'll stick to the first click and time to vent approach from now on!

My 4/4 just stlnks of petrol for the next twenty miles on sharp corners or roundabouts. So very rarely fill to the first c lick.
.+8 Now gone for a 1800 4/4. Duratec in bright yellow.

I had the same problem until I was advised to only fill to the first click, the tank would also start to overflow too, especially in the summer months.

Rick
+8s exported to USA art that time had a hybrid system which included "Advanced Evaps" . This was to pass the emissions regulations in place at that time which at that time were different to those in Europe.
I am no expert on this system but as I understand it one of the features is a black canister on the bulkhead (Firewall) which contains activated carbon, this is to deal with the fumes from petrol (gasoline) which are pushed there by the displacement of air from the tank. Overfilling the tank can push neat fuel into this container and now the system is "blocked" It can throw up a fault code to the ecu, and actually stop the engine firing, but normally it just misfires and stutters for a few miles until it clears.
As others have said , just fill to the first click of the pump and you should be all right.

Could be it's not enough of a problem to require a solution ..... not familiar with the nuts and bolts of how the canister is connected to the tank .... but if it's by a flexible hose then possibly a t-piece fitted close to the canister with a stub of pipe ending in a one way vent valve would allow the tank to vent but keep fuel where it's meant to be ..... I have one in the vent of the tank of my racer .... allows the air inwards to vent the tank but in the event of the car ending up upside down will stop fuel going the other way. On the mog it would act as a bypass vent for when the canister was flooded.
