Hi All
I dropped my Plus 4 into BHM today for MOT and service. They immediately picked up that it was missing the VIN plate. Apparently they have to have sight of it for the mot. Fortunately they had sight of it in 2014 when they last had it at their premises and we’re able to use their records as verification.
I’m going to start the process of obtaining a new one and wondered if anyone has trodden this path before? Any pointers would be a great help.

Is the official (but basic) stamp on the crossmember not enough for an MOT?

Yes, I think they just need sight of the chassis number for the MOT. That was certainly the case for my '72 car.

If the car had a VIN plate (not sure when these came in), it certainly used to be the case that a replacement could be ordered from the factory via your local Morgan dealer - you will probably need to take the V5 along to the dealer for them to photocopy.

Hope this helps.

I think it was about 1979 when Vin plates started?

Had one on the toolbox on my '76. It was riveted in place.

The first time I took my Morgan for an MOT the tester asked if I'd brought the old certificate so he didn't have to go looking for the chassis plate. Mine is as those above but glued rather than riveted.

This is mine .... '75 4 seater removed while I was painting stuff .... flimsy little plastic coated ali thing stuck on with double-sided tape ..... did they try a different one out every week? .... for a company that cleaves to the traditional they didn't half use a lot of different forms of chassis plates smile

Will stick this back somewhere out of the way for the sake of completeness but I have different plans for the spot on top of the toolbox.

Kevcaster .... got to be asked ... how did you mislay the original one ??

Hamwich .... loving Morgan's solution to the march of progress overwhelming their primitive little fuse-box .... fit two primitive little fuse-boxes!! smile

What I'm thinking about is the 17 character standard which came in gradually over 1980. I know that because my 1980 MGB had the 17 digit VIN plate (I always thought it was 16 digit), but some 1979 MGB's didn't. Before that it was a much simpler chassis plate, with variations.

From Wiki...........
Modern VINs are based on two related standards, originally issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1979 and 1980: ISO 3779 and ISO 3780 respectively. Compatible but different implementations of these ISO standards have been adopted by the European Union and the United States, respectively.
