Looks like my new Banner is toast (not holding enough charge to start the M3W, even after a run and staying on a CTEK conditioner). Of course it could be the CTEK *and* the rectifier are the problem (unlikely). Car voltmeter shows 14.2-14.4v on a run, and 12.4v at rest. I could buy a new battery charger, then a new battery... but noticed the motorbike world seems to like the Shido batteries. <£200 for a Banner replacement in size, 2Kg, and 480CA amps ... only also needs a Lithium charger. See the LIX30 in their catalog. They also do one that connects to an app... wow!

I think MMC fit Banner batteries in all their vehicles. Is it only the M3W ones that are rubbish?

I went through three new Banner batteries in one year with the Plus 8, fourth one was perfect and was on the vehicle for the past 4 and a half years with no issues. All on a CTEK trickle charger apart from the first one.

2 Banner batteries failed in 6 months - looking at Varley red top or Odyssey Extreme as a replacement.
Anybody tried one of these?

we have an odyssey in our plus 8. Usually it is because the car has been allowed to site for a long time without a trickle charger that it becomes an issue.

Shido fitted this evening. Banner on the trickle charger for another week and still not enough amps to start the M3W. Will try a reset charge. 1. Fitted the battery tray fine, although the battery strap covered the test button. As the Shido is a little shorter I added some more foam padding to the strap to uncover the test button. 2. Very fiddly to refit the +ve leads until I realised I could unscrew the terminal, mount the leads to that separately, then screw that in! 3. Started the car in half a turn.... 14.1v on the voltmeter... success! (4. Must remember NOT to plug in the trickle charger! It probably wouldnt do the dilithium crystals LiFePo much good!).

You may find that you don't need a trickle charger for your new Lithium Ion battery. I have had a Magneti Marelli 53034 for the last 5 years and it seems to hold plenty of charge for months. On a few occasions I have given it a short charge from a normal battery charger and the Amps drop down to almost zero in just a few minutes. It has never failed to crank the engine over with plenty of enthusiasm.

I fitted a lithium battery recently and it saved 13 pounds and cranks the engine over very well, even when not driven daily.

I would not say Banner batteries are rubbish, mine lasted 7 years. I changed for a Yuasa U1R when the banner would not spin the engine fast enough after a charge, it had been failing for some time. Why did Yuasa decide to put the terminals at 45deg angle making it hard to attach the cables?

Maybe they cut the grass better at that angle?
