Vettel is to join racing point ( aka Team India etc) which is to be renamed as Aston Martin. Perez has been fired so the line up will be Vettel and Stroll's son.

Question is, will Aston go bust again this year or next? Or will Mr Strulovich have enough money to finance the £300m annual cost of a good F1 campaign together with the losses of Aston Martin as we hit recession? Will it all follow the hubris of Team India and Mallya or will it be more like Mateschitz.

It's about time someone had a go at getting AM on a sound footing, Mr S probably views Ferrari as a model to emulate albeit not a good racing record at the moment! I doubt it will be all from his pockets though.

Will be very interesting to see the dynamics in the team next year.

Might be a good time to come into F1 with the new rules and cost cap

Formula One teams have agreed to impose a new budget cap from 2021. After lengthy negotiations, F1 will be decreasing spending on a sliding scale over several years. The cap will be set at $145m (£119m) in 2021, dropping to $140m in 2022, then $135m for 2023–25.

The new rules for 2022 also include a simplifying of the power unit so I wonder if Aston Martin might consider their own engine instead of the current Racing Point deal with Mercedes.

Or will Mercedes tie up a deal to supply all of AM's road car engines.

I will also be very interested to see how Vettel fits into the team but feel sorry for Checo.

Fascinating stuff, looking forward to next season already.

People have tried many times. Its gone bust 8 times so far!! But the issues here are threefold. First there is over ambition - you dont build a Ferrari in one year or even 10. Ask McLaren. Ask the Ferrari man who tried with Lotus. The second is that in a recesssion you cut back on expense rather than increase it - you need to conserve cash and not waste it on starting a factory to build a high end car in the back of a Welsh beyond. . The third is that when building up a company you avoid vanity projects which is all F1 is. AM can never compete with the likes of Merc and anything but winning is useless as a promotion tool for fast cars. Ask yourself why the likes of Lambo or Koenigsegg, or Bugatti dont do F1.

I understand your sentiments Howard but Lawrence "Stroll" seems to have been a very shrewd investor in the past. He is a fully paid up petrol head and has contacts and access to some serious investors as well.

As I understand it, he's also pretty ruthless and if he has to take tough decisions about factories, he will.

When you say you don't build a Ferrari in one year or even 10 do you mean as an F1 team or a car brand?

Well the Ferrari race team is nothing to write home about at the moment and despite several hiccups, Aston Martin have a heritage dating back to the early 20's so maybe some clever marketing people can bottle some of that history.

Ferrari don't seem to view F1 as vanity project.

I do agree that it is highly unlikely Aston Martin will ever get close to Ferrari as a Brand (although they might actually beat them as an F1 team in the short term) but maybe, just maybe, Lawrence Stroll is the man to take it forward and ensure the survival of this iconic British Marque. Maybe it's time for the Garagistes to shine again

It is of course possible that Stroll sticks to his guns and builds Aston into something worthwhile as a business, something that no one else has managed to do. But in a long business life myself, I've seen all sorts of hubris / daft ideas / idealism / lack of realism and this strikes me as another example. Bit like Mike Ashley and Newcastle United. Or more to the point like Bahar and Lotus.

The likes of Porsche and even Ferrari have been built on decades of gradual incremental growth. They have been patient but stuck to their guns.
