CBY are you sure they still use a needle bearing? My 2005 Roadster had a needle bearing which cracked went sluggish and eventually blocked the steering wheel totally an hour later. So I had time and a kind of pre-warning. But I thought that the needle bearing was replaced by something teflon or the like later on?
Anyway, Andyrich, take it serious. Our cars are of the same 2005 year and there is needle bearing. I have to replace this small bearing (HK 2210 SKF). I use a longer one HK 2216 SKF (16mm long instead of 10mm), there is enough room. If they use now teflon, it is better. Andyrich said there is grease at this level, but generaly with teflon there is no need?

You may wish to check that the rubbing noise is not just the horn pick up rubbing on the contact disc that is fixed to the bottom of the steering wheel boss.

I think the creaking is actually something rubbing on the plastic column covers. I wouldn't have thought a bearing should have failed on something with only 2500 miles? I wonder if the grease that I found on the covers was someones attempt to stop the rubbing.
The alignment of the UJs makes sense & If I thought that maybe one drive was with the steering column in the highest position & one could have been on the lowest that could explain why the tightness varies.
I will get the covers off again & check the alignment & report back. On my previous Morgan, the steering wheel boss was fat and it rubbed on the lower cowl. I cut a small arc out of the lower section, which helped.

Further update on the rubbing noise - Covers are off & the slightest movement of the wheel still creates the rubbing noise, its more a squeal of plastic rubbing plastic now & sounds like its a bit further down the column, any ideas how the indicator & washer stalks are removed? doesn't appear to be an obvious way.

There's a copper contact & contactor ring under the steering wheel boss, which allows power to the horn push as the steering is rotated, if this is dry it may be your noise source
Far easier to pull this off first & lube it, than start messing around with the stalks
