It's always difficult, I always try and make rational car buying choices. I rarely manage to do this in reality though... I think if you rationalise any car purchase over and above a Ford Fiesta, then you're kidding yourself anyway ;-)

I think that providing that you use 'man logic' all car purchases above a Fiesta are completely rational! coffee

I'm also re-positioning our small car 'fleet' at the moment Mike and of course all cars are being chosen on a completely rational basis, apart from one slight aberration that has increased the fleet size by one - in mitigation it was bought for Head Office! thumbs

Thanks for the pointer, the S3 colour combination didn't appeal to me. The S4 I tried my best to do a deal with the dealer, but he seemed to totally ignore me

I wish! ooo Not as fast as your M1, but a lively drive nevertheless and it has character by the bucket-load. flag Boshers had a drive recently and is sorely tempted, but hasn't put it to the household finance committee yet!

Hope to take delivery of another toy on Friday, from Germany this time but not a Beemer? confused2

Curious, the S4 at SGT is just 3 weeks younger than the S3, and £23k more expensive. Looks a lovely car though.

Hope that's a 987 Mike?

I lost 50% when I traded my '01 986 S - only owned it 10 months.

But, that was better than a chap I met at Pro-Porsche, where I used to get mine serviced. Identical car (bar the colour) including mileage - 70k - just suffered IMS failure. Due to car value it wasn't worth putting another engine in. He'd turned down an offer on private sale of £7k - but did say he would have felt really guilty had he sold it... I got £6.5k trading mine on the Clubman Cooper D. Pro-Porsche had just picked up a '98 2.7 for £2.5k shocked2. Bottom has really dropped out of the market on Porkers frown

Hardly comparable though - one has done 30k miles and the other 3k miles! The S4 is nearly new, the S3 has been used (personally mileage is never a concern for me on an Aero as I know they are good for it, but a lot of owners prioritise low mileage).

Even at equal mileage I'd expect the relative rarity of the S4, and the multitude of updates the S4 model benefitted from to keep the S4 priced significantly above the S3.

I am with you on the mileage issue, indeed I would see such low mileage as a potential issue, at 3k miles it is possible that the S4 has not yet been fully debugged and of course is now well out of warranty.
Out of curiosity what are the multiple updates on the S4 over the S3 apart from an extra 400cc of course. I recall that the rear tank was re-positioned reducing interior space but increasing boot size, different colour instruments? a conventional hand brake (for me these are change rather than updates). The S4 is very well specced but I have always understood that for high end cars, having all the toys makes them easier to sell rather than increases the price. The colour is also a little challenging.

The big advantage that the S4 has for me is that it an Auto, making it the only Aero I could personally consider now and of course the other argument for the price is "try and find another one"

And the S4 looks even better in the flesh than in the photos Rich - a highly specced car with low mileage. A nice car for someone and the last of the breed flag
