Well to say I am becoming ever more doubtful of the media and Governments, this tops it all IMO. Doubt I'll ever believe any protester or campaign again.

Sigh. Life was much simpler in the 70s-80s and 90s.

Nothing new here. I can recall "Rent-a-crowd" as a derogatory comment in my early teenage years - possibly related to the Aldermaston Marches of the 60s

Interesting the difference in tone both sides of the pond .... US geared for political activism and to sway policy .... UK more commercial/personal with 'PR stunts' the closest to something that could be construed as lobbying ..... I'm more concerned by the internet facilitated mobilisation of 'like minded groups' (both left and right) that can whip up what seems to be a passionate and spontaneous outburst in short order.... politically motivated flash-mobbing

Yup you just had to shout "party. free beer" and it would occur naturally.

That sadly is nothing compared to the on-line equivalent that can be bought.

For those of you outside the e-bubble godaddy are one of the big names in registering domain names and other services.
GoDaddy now have a subsidiary called mad mini which runs a web site called fanmenow.com which will get you 15,000 followers for $15.
So this is one of the biggest Interweb companies gaming your reality.
Your rating (follower count) and a tweet will show up in the various search algorithms to provide a weighting on the information to other tools.

Rent a virtual crowd is cheap.

Not sure about the 90s, but my life in the 70s and 80s was so much simpler, easier, far less to get wound up about.
I blame 24 hour news media and the social media bear pit.
My solution is to slowly disappear, I'm just about to pull the plug on LinkedIn, it serves no purpose now I'm retired.

I'm the other way - my life today is far more relaxed, and far simpler now than it ever was in the 80's and 90's.

That may be a reflection on the kind of life I led in my younger, less sensible, years. smile
