For those who are blissfully unaware of their rear belt drive because it's working just fine, here are a few different detours down nonessential paths that may take your mind off 2020 for awhile. While doing some research on Gates drive belt torque capacity I found a paper that may be interesting to others: https://www.royalsupply.com/downloads/Gates/Belt_failure_analysis_Final.pdfGates claims a properly applied and adjusted belt can last 50-60k miles (obviously unfamiliar with M3W alloy rear sprockets) Also found various sources that give power loses associated with chain drives (1-4% loss), belts (9-15% loss), and shaft drives (20-25% loss). And I still haven't found definitive data on belt torque capacity. I'm looking to see if a 1" wide or 1 1/8" wide belt would have sufficient capacity for the M3W, the purpose of the narrower belt being to alleviate clearance issues while permitting closer to center of machine wheel alignment.

Interesting stats on the efficiency.

The very early M3W's originally had a narrower drive belt, possibly 1" wide, along with a rear disc brake set up rather than a drum. I this must have proved to be too weak as the 1.5" belt was fitted for production and retro fitted to the early cars. This caused some problems with clearance with the rear wheel tyre that eventually resulted in the change to the hub offset.
The Gates drive belt is far more durable than the alloy rear sprocket. I replaced 3 alloy sprockets but never the drive belt, it was still in good condition once the alloy debris was cleaned off.

Three alloy sprockets, one SuperMax sprocket and now the stock steel sprocket on the same belt. When the SuperMax failed due to the little bolts attaching the neoprene to the machined alloy coming undone and tearing up the middle of the belt. Belt is fine but worn. I have over 52,000 miles on it and it probably could stand to be replaced. I've heard stories of these belts hitting 100,000 miles on bikes. I'd have to assume that these were large cruisers that were babied.
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.

My 05 HD Roadking had just over 80,000 miles on it when I sold it. Still had the original belt
