The chain drive conversion would certainly be a proven way of reducing the belt noises laugh2 . It has some things going for it but a few drawbacks as well.

Nice. I have had the pleasure of driving Phils chain drive converted car for an extended time on the motorway - it was a revelation in silence and smoothness ( S&S ) , the opposite of NVH smile

I like the idea of chain drive but for one exception, where does it fly should it break? Murphy’s Law prevails and dealing with a broken drive belt might be better than dealing with a chain flailing about.

NVH a delete kit ordered. Thank all for the feedback.

As a former m/cyclist, I was happy enough with chains, given I carried a link extractor half links, spring links etc to be able to effect running repairs, I suspect trying to repair a broken belt might be difficult.... Though it seems belts may be best overall...?

Yes, a chain can be repaired in the field and it might get you home but with the thought of which link is likely to fail next. A belt fails and you pull a spare belt out and install it and it will be good for a very long time. And the only special tool you need(besides the wrenches) is you credit card to have paid for the belt before the trip.

To change the drive belt is not a job you would contemplate at the side of the road. The rear wheel needs to come out and then the swing arm, as the belt loops around the swing arm, and to get to the swing arm it is seats and lower rear bulkhead out. Having said that I am not aware of a drive belt having failed or been changed and there are plenty of M3W's I regularly drive with who have done 30,000 plus miles on the original belt.
