I have read a number of past threads on the benefits of the Optimax Chip and am about to go ahead. I note that the ECU has to be opened and the chip inserted. I have a 96, Plus 8 and the ECU looks to be bolted to the kerbside of the passenger footwell. Are there any worries about unbolting the unit from the car and opening the ECU.

In short, no. disconnect the battery and allow a few minutes for the ECU to discharge then disconnect the cable plug from the ECU. You can now unbolt the ECU and remove from the vehicle, what you do not want to have is static electricity present when opening the unit making sure the area you are working in is clean. Be careful when fitting the chip to make sure all the pins are located correctly and the chip is the right way round before pushing into place. To gain the best results you should also fit a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. www.gomog.com/plus8/fittingaeprom.htm

A couple of points for you:
The Optimax chip is more of an "optimising" chip and should give better fuel consumption, the Tornado will release more performance and better drivability, and is the usual choice for Hotwire +8 owners .
You have to unbolt a couple of items from the top of the bulkhead before you can access the bolts which hold the ECU in place on the underside. The really big issue is getting the plug back into the unit without bending any of the pins . You have to be incredibly careful to do this successfully, as you are working upside down in the passenger footwell, and everything is a bit tight.
Good luck

Very many thanks for your information, I am now tempted by the Tornado option, and sounds like I also need a steadier hand than my own. Dave

Dave
Just a couple of other observations for you:
The chip by itself won't make a heap of diffidence without some other mods.
Firstly , so you have a 4 branch exhaust on each side?
Secondly , do you have a better air filter than the standard "canister" type?
If neither of these is present then I would do them first before the chip change.
You should see a gain of about 20 to 25 bhp and a much better torque curve once these have been completed and the the chip installed. Mine went from 161 to 182
