Does anyone have any experience on troubleshooting the MAF on a 2003 (GEMS) Plus 8, they look to be expensive items and I wondered if I could make a simple ohmic resistance test before committing to buy one? The problem I have is the engine will start (just) but not continue running so I'd like to eliminate this before moving on to the IACV. Many thanks!

Try starting and idling with the MAF disconnected.

Where abouts are you? I have a new old stock one that I bought in exactly the circumstance that you're trying to avoid. Turned out to be a lambda sensor problem so I put mine back in it's box having wasted a lot of time and trouble locating it (at the time they were out of stock at the local main agents).

There are also much cheaper non genuine ones on ebay, but the landrover forums seem to suggest that they may not be ideally set up. However they may give an indication of whether your problem is MAF related or something else.

If you live nearby I could lend you mine to see whether it helps.

pm me if you don't get sorted.

Malcolm - just PM'd you the ohmic values I measured on mine last night. I'm hoping to borrow a scanner tomorrow since I would hope this problem would log a DTC. Many thanks!

Try giving all the contacts a good clean.
Frequently it's not the actual MAF that is at fault, but a poor electrical connection somewhere in circuit (or Lambda sensors! wink ).

Cheers,

The only times that I have had idle issues at startup on my GEMS +8 were when the battery was not completely charged. Now I keep a battery tender on it if it is going to sit for more than a few days.

Also, using a Faultmate Nano or similar, one can check the number of steps for the Idle Air CV which should read between 15 and 30 steps. See page 77 of GEMS by David Poole on the GoMoG site.

Thanks Skip and all other posters - I've pretty well narrowed it down to the IACV, which is now probably the cleanest part of the car, but the problem persists. I'm also now convinced it has to be the stepper motor and I'm putting her in to a bloke with a Rovacom this week.
