Do you have to pay emissions tax when you take that kind of car into town as we do here in England ?
Nope. Exempted as "Vehicule de collection" FWIW, the TfL site for this sort of gubbins is sodding useless for foreign registered vehicles visiting London's LEZ, ULEZ and CC zone. I came into London last month in my Euro 5 diesel Transit van to drop some stuff at my daughter's new flat in Camden. An accident on the approaches to the Dartford crossing meant that I ended up heading in through Sarf London, crossing Waterloo bridge. "What the hell ?" I asked myself, "I'll just pay the congestion charge." Soooo, I downloaded the TfL app and tried to pay. When I plugged in my Licence plate number, the site didn't recognise it, and said I had to pay £315. What I actually owed was £32.50; £15 for the Congestion charge, and £17.50 for the ULEZ. I eventually found a site on which I could register my vehicle details and uploaded my registration document, which it wouldn't recognise, but that it might do in 10 days time. Meantime, I'm being threatened by TfL with big fines if I don't pay in 3 days...... I emailed TfL, the Mayor of London, and anyone else I could think of. No proper replies. In the end I worked out that I could pay the £15 for the congestion charge by skipping the ULEZ charge on the App (ignoring the accompanying threats). I then sent a cheque for £17;50 for my transgression into the ULEZ, as I just couldn't get ANY sense from it online. Despite making several phone calls, impossible to speak to a human being capable of doing anything to solve the problem. I feel that I showed nothing but good faith. All that I wanted to do was pay what was owed. I ended up tearing my hair out, wasting loads of time, and incurring extra expense in trying to pay. TfL will no doubt complain that drivers of foreign registered vehicles fail to pay what they owe. How about they set up the system in such a way that it works ? Still, as it's Boris' mates at Crapita who are running the whole shebang, why should I be surprised ? What a crock of shite. I'd advise anyone visiting London in a foreign plated vehicle that is older than Euro 6 for diesel or Euro 5 for petrol to start trying to register it with TfL at least 2 weeks before travelling. I think the system works fine for UK registration numbers. My point is that it's lazy/useless/incompetent that the system doesn't seem to recognise non-uk plates. Assume for the sake of argument that someone on non-uk plates trying to pay, is already displaying good faith. Set the system up so they can pay, declaring which Euro norm their vehicle meets, uploading a registration document so it can be checked if necessary. I honestly ended up thinking that I'd have been better off not trying to pay the charges, and just hoping that they'd struggle get the money off me.

It's pretty dire really I guess it's the island thinking going on, I wonder how they get on with the diplomatic plates that seem to get a pretty free hand in most other arears that I've seen. Really annoying when you are trying to do the right thing. Any accidents they (CD) have been involved in down here relating to the college get pushed away under the carpet quick time. Now you are registered do you think it might be easier next time ? I certainly hope so.

I had a Dart Crossing account. Because I hadn't used it for a year they advised me it would be closed unless I put more money in. The balance was about £16.
There were no other options. So they closed the account and then I had to jump through hoops to get a refund, which was only possible by cheque.
Narrow minded thinking. Why not just leave the account open? Beats me.

Scary... It means that when I'll plan my trip to the UK with my Euro4 M3W (might happen in 2021 or 2022? Who knows...) I better keep out of London unless I have a clear writtten offficial notification from TFL saying I'm free to enter; or at least how much I will be charged. Because this kind of surprise as the one this guy from Ibiza got, is not funny at all...

Narrow minded thinking. Why not just leave the account open? Beats me. And there was I Dave thinking I was the only one. Why can't these accounts just stay open rather like money on your Oyster Card. I accused them of stealing my money which prompted a quick repayment to my Visa Acct.

In February we went to see the Tutankhamen exhibition in the Saatchi Gallery. We haven’t been to central London for years, just Brooklands a couple of times. I didn’t fancy the rigmarole of sorting out congestion charges so we booked a hotel in Hounslow, just inside the zone and used Oyster cards for public transport. We were on a good bus route and Underground link. So much easier! I checked the TFL website for LEZ/ULEZ charges but none applied to the tin top. I asked at hotel reception for confirmation and they agreed. Next, out of curiosity I checked the Morgan and it was exempt too. A 2002 Plus8! I found the TFL website ok for buying visitor Oyster cards and the vehicle liability checks as it was just basic stuff. I do question the clarity for non standard circumstances though. Why not put an early question in to distinguish between uk reg vehicles and non uk that channels you appropriately? I would think that for London that would apply due to the frequency of non uk vehicles. It does look as though some improvements have been made.
It was an enjoyable couple of days just before Covid escalation.
