During the summer I was on the search for replacement front brake pads for my M3W. The original pads weren't performing too well and I'd suffered a long standing issue of the nearside wheel locking up easily, which was something I'd never been able to cure. A look on the MMC website revealed that Mulfab (Mulberry Fabrications) manufactured race/track brake upgrade kits for 4 wheel Morgans, so I decided to phone them up to enquire whether they made a M3W upgrade kit. The answer I received was No...........but maybe we should

Mulfab are located around an hour from me, so I made arrangements to visit so they could look over my M3W. A few weeks later and my M3W was dropped off for them to develop an brake upgrade kit. In addition to road use, I race/hillclimb my M3W, so one of my main requirements was for the upgrade kit to utilise readily available performance brake pads, such as EBC Yellowstuff, which are all but unavailable at reasonable cost as replacements for the standard brake pads.

The resulting Mulfab brake upgrade kit utilises larger 300mm vented discs mounted on custom alloy bells and Hi-Spec calipers, with improved mounts, with the bonus of studs for easier fixing of the mudguards
The kit comes with a set of EBC brake pads, but other brake pads (standard road or full on race) will fit.

I've been been test driving the new brakes for the past couple of weekends and have now bedded the pads in. Must say that I've been getting more and more impressed with them with use. Yes, front tyre grip will always be the limiting factor in ultimate stopping power, but we already know that. However, the fact that an upgrade kit is now available, with affordable brake pads that will work well on Track Days or for competition, is use is well worth a look at.

As for general road use, well by way of experimentation, I am about to fit a set of Pagid road brake pads that cost me just £15.22 from CarParts4Less. Will be interesting to see how they perform

I will be interested in hearing about how the braking improved as I am really disappointed in the over all poor braking. I do not think I could press hard enough to actually lock up a wheel.

General price range?

Was out for a run on Saturday, and had an SUV pull out of a driveway in front of me, apparently oblivious that I was there, despite having my DRLs on. I was going about 50mph at the time, and was able to 'chirp' the front tires pretty well. Not sure if the back locked or not.

How much is this kit?

rcmatt - I would have your brakes checked out. Perhaps there is an issue with the pads and/or air in the brake fluid

I've never had the rear brake lock up and maybe more rear braking effort could be gained by modifying the master cylinder setup.

Now can the do the rear disc brake conversion as well???

kankeL - The existing rear drum brake should give improved braking effort with increased hydraulic pressure. This is not possible with the existing master cylinder arrangement.

Installing twin brake master cylinders and a balance bar on the pedal box would allow brake bias to be adjusted to taste, and also offer the benefit of a larger master cylinder for the front brakes. Mulfab consider it possible to modify the existing pedal box and it could potentially become a Stage 2 upgrade

That looks like a very good set up WarBird. Well done for bringing this to their attention as a worthwhile development. Not that I have had any problems with the standard brakes, just the lack of grip from the Blockley tyres. You must have some issues with your brakes rcmatt if you cannot lock the fronts up.
