The S5 handbrake is supposed to be an improvement over the S4, after an s4 with the handbrake on rolled down the hill at the factory....

It may well be an improvement over the S4 Simon, but at 4 years (and used when parked, even though I have an auto) there's clearly *still* more room for improvement!
Since CX series cars have so few carryover parts maybe their handbrake works?

It seems the drum in disc handbrakes were more efficient and reliable as in the Volvo, the 911 and others... From a dull memory I owned a Citroen that had inboard front discs on which the handbrake operated, but then Citroen were ever innovative..

Interesting George because I also had a few Citroen's, a couple of 2CV's and an ID20 nicknamed the Barge. As the latter used hydraulics to operate suspension as well as assisting brakes, I wondered if the former left the parking brakes pressurised until it leaked down and rested on its haunches.

Richard, yeah Citroen were very different, my Citroen was a GS Club with all the hydraulic gizmology.

I remember to set carburation required depressurising the suspension first, in order to remove the load of the hydraulic pump from the engine...! Apparently they used to snap camshafts on occasion as the hydraulic pump was driven of the end of the camshaft... I believe the Citroen suspension suspension design and components such as the "spheres" were used by other manufacturers such as RR, apparently buying the spheres from Citroen as opposed to RR could save a few bob..?

Apologies for the thread drift, but it`s good to chat..? smile

Having has a Plus Six (rejected and returned to the factory) I can confirm the handbrake did not work, car would creep without effort if left in gear at say traffic lights and handbrake applied

The Flitting, would you care to share your experience with the Plus Six?
Taffy, there is still a couple of companies that re bond material onto pads and linings.
As Simon said, you should've asked on here first ! sos

I have had an issue on my AC Cobra with a leaking rear calliper where I had naively hoped that a set of new seals would cure said leak.

As seals are no longer available I have ended up funding the design of a complete 4 pot calliper conversion.

It will result in a set of brakes which are more in keeping with the performance of the vehicle, but it would have been a tad cheaper to have just bought a set of seals.

The handbrake on my Aero based Plus 8 works, after a fashion.. pulled on hard it will hold the car against the transmission as long as the car is idling...

The old Mercedes 190 had little drums inside the rear discs for the handbrake, worked well.
The new C Class cars seem to have a handbrake that uses the rear disc calipers, or the auto box, I've no idea. But they are applied by some power means.... I've now real idea how they function. All I do is press a button on the gear lever switch and there is a "whirring" noise and they are on.

Peter, it seems drum in disc handbrake operation worked well over many years, though perhaps now old hat.

Electrical handbrakes depend upon rather a lot of technology involved in their operation, requiring connection to a computer to carry out replacement of rear brake pads, a task which used to be relatively simple.

Found this vid which provides a general introduction to the electric hand brake system.

Luddite,

thanks for that, most informative. I guess that the handbrake will never go out of adjustment as there are no cables to stretch and no pads to wear, so should give an easy MOT pass!

Peter, I am plleased you found interest in that vid.

My good lady put her Evoque in for it`s second service with circa 20k miles on the clock with no apparent brake issues and received a bill for circa £500 for rear brake service... They said at the next service it might require attention to the front brakes... I may be tempted to blow the cobwebs off my tool box...hmm..?
