I am having touble shifting . First gear is touchy and downshifting into ssecond is tough. I think I might need a new clutch or transmittion fluid, any ideas?

Do you have a decent pedal? Try bleeding your clutch slave cylinder.

Cable or hydraulic clutch operation?
If cable (or rod - there were a number) check the free play is not excessive.
If hydraulic I would check master / slave cylinders aren't leaking thus reducing the clutch release action.

As mentioned above - do the easy stuff first. Check gearbox oil level. Flush, drain and refill. Check clutch linkage (my 72 is rod) and adjust properly.

Anything else (clutch/gearbox) is an 'engine out' job unfortunately.

Is the gear change remotely operated? I know on the Rover gearboxes the gear change is remote & if the bushes wear you can get something similar.
This might help
Gearbox

Good call - even if not remote, it may be something as simple as a worn ball at the end of the gearlever (I had a Land Rover that would only engage 1st or reverse if you went into 2nd gear first - a gearlever swap sorted it out).

Arwyn knows his stuff with these boxes, hopefully he'll be able to diagnose accurately.
