With lockdown looming over us here in England, I am looking for a project to keep me (and Claire!) sane. I would like to purchase a M3W from 2012/2013 with not too many miles on the clock and in original condition as supplied from the factory. My aim is to create a top line machine with all of the weak points rectified and everything checked and tested replacing where necessary, in short, better than new!

Thanks Paul, They are all very nice specimens, ideal for my project but I was rather hoping for a private sale without the dealers mark up. Having a car here to work on at my leisure, so to speak, will be so much nicer than working under pressure to get the job done fo a customer. It will also be nice to do everything - all the little niggly bits and pieces - as well as the major upgrades. Time will tell.

The one on AutoTrader looks nice. They do seem to hold their price well, may even rise if production does cease, as rumoured.

You will find a suitable vehicle and I'm sure your commentary on the upgrades and mods will be very valuable.

The problem with buying from a dealer, Taffmog, is that the dealer has to put on 20% VAT and also his mark up. I am not registered for VAT ( too small ) so I can't claim it back in any other way than passing it on to my customer at the end of the project. Maybe my business will grow to the VAT size but I do hope not. I just want to be left alone to do nice things for nice people and their cars - not caught up in the commercial rat race - call me a dreamer!

One of the oddities about private Morgan sales is that the owners seem to ask about the same as the top-end trade sale price - at least for the more modern cars. I can only assume that they look on line - of which the majority of sales are trade - and chose their price accordingly.

We live in a state where we pay "personal property tax" to the county on our vehicles. Two years ago we had a huge jump in the tax on our plus 8. The county creak said there was a plus 8 that sold for a HIGH value and that is what they based it upon.

Surely this isn't true. As I understand it, most car dealers use the second-hand margin scheme, on which they only pay VAT on their margin (or mark-up), not on the whole value of the car which would already have been VAT paid when first registered. The dealer's margin is in this case the perceived "added value".
