hi i am new to the group. I just received my 2017 M3W over the weekend. I did not get any documentation but one of the members sent me a copy of the
users manual. My question is: I went to check the oil level and there is not dip stick. Is there some marking inside the oil tank that shows what the oil level should be at?
I asked the dealer and they said they changed the oil before they shipped it but they put in 5 quarts of oil. From what i am reading they should have put in 6. I dont want to run a qt low so
wanted to know what the level should be looking into the tank.

You can see the level if you look in the tank through the cap hole. The "MAX" oil level is in line with the forward angled plate and the "MIN" in line with the rear plate (about 1/2 " lower than "MAX"). As it is a dry sump system, check the oil level a few minutes after the engine has been run, so it scavenges the oil back to the tank

Only check the oil when engine is warm.

There will be two plates visible when you look into the tank. They are at different levels, a minimum and a maximum level indicator for warm readings.

As mentioned you need to run the engine a bit as a certain amount of oil will go ack to the engine. Otherwise you will get a false low reading. Unlike a Harley, where you check the oil level HOT just running it warm enough to get all the oil back into the tank suffices.

Where are y'all from?

It can be confusing if someone has overfilled the tank and the level markers are under the surface - it happened to one of my customers recently.

I recall in 1978 I had a friend with a new Gold Wing. There is a very difficult to see "sight glass" on the lower right side of the engine. The friend filled the engine until he could see oil at the fill hole......WOW did that engine SMOKE

Phil, to add to your upgrades, how about a dip stick type oil tank cap? That way the level indicator will always be on the cap and not buried under too much oil in the tank.

Just a thought... smile

Buried under oil = a massive overfill. The two bar indicators could not be clearer.
