Hi folks

I have replaced my front wheel bearings ('82 plus 8) but I can't get the grease seals in. The main reason is that the seals supplied measure 72mm OD, and the bore is 71.16, give or take. The ones I took out of the hubs were OK on the OD but about 1mm too large for the axle, so the hub filled with water. It was an unpleasant experience for the bearings.

I've gone through catalogues and the nearest I can find is Timken 712260.

If anyone has found just the right seal I'll be forever grateful (And it's not the one in gomog).

Looking up previous comments, I see that I am not alone in my search

I believe that my bearings failed because of water entry, and that was because the seal did not fit properly on the axle, even though it fitted well in the hub. If the seal is fitted to the hub before a trial slip over the axle that problem might not be obvious. In my case the clearance between the seal and axle was about 1mm

I have been advised that this works: SKF 17624 (In metric units ID 44.45, OD 71.37, width 7.95 .... the axle measures 44.28, the hub 71.16. I've yet to receive them so will comment when fitted, if indeed they do. The apparently small clearance between the seal and axle is a concern but they are rubber and aren't all that round, so we'll see).

I add that my car is an '82 but it has a steering rack and I THINK that demanded new axles and hubs --- you'd need to be pretty keen on rack and pinion to change all that over and I'm grateful to the previous owner!

I use "Bellray Saltwater Proof" grease to protect bearings and other parts on bikes used in winter/ salt. Very effective.
You need a high pressure cleaner to spray it away!

Those should be the correct seals
There isnt a need to change stub axles and hubs when a steering rack is fitted though...

I had my +8 serviced by a renowned Morgan specialist. On collection the car was gleaming, especially the chrome wires.
A few miles down the road the car developed a rumble from a front wheel and then later the other wheel started. On strip down the hubs were found to be full of water, the car had obviously been washed with a powerful pressure washer.

Yep, sounds like it. I suspect that the mystery surrounding seal part numbers has a bit to do with it. I believe my seals were fitted professionally and they were wrong for the axles. I must say I was a bit surprised to take the hubs off and have water run out of them!
