Hi All i am new to this site and indeed to Morgan ownership. At the moment i can't really even call it a Morgan. I have promised a friend i will take on his abandoned 1968 4/4 car ,so having done the deal i travelled to Cornwall to pick it up , so i now have a shed full of Morgan parts back in Norfolk UK .It didn't have an engine but i have now found a 1600 Crossflow a 2737E T3, hoping thats not my first mistake. I won't be starting till next year until i find out exactly what i ought / want to be doing to her. I see many like the Mazda MX5 gearbox and pay large amounts to have it fit the Ford Engine although i can't see anyone fitting it to the Crossflow . I run an MX5 as an everyday car and am wondering if anyone has fitted the engine and gearbox ? Anyway enough for now .Mick Harris Retired Norfolk

Someone will be along in a moment to answer your gearbox question. There are a few on here with experience of cars of the same period as yours including one gong through a comprehensive rebuild.

Don't think the Mazda box is viable without a considerable amount of custom work.

Welcome .... you'll find plenty of info here and someone who will be able to answer pretty much any question that crops up .... there's a few ongoing rebuilds of similar car to yours on the go too ....the common gearbox upgrade for the crossflow is the 5 speed Ford Type 9 ...it's a straightforward fit with few mods needed ...good luck with it (and when you work out how, post some pics ..... we all love to see other people's cars even if they're currently in boxes.)

Welcome to TM. Like K I have been rebuilding my 1976 4/4. Just coming to the end of the journey. It's at the paint shop as we speak. All the answers to your questions will be found here. As for the gearbox , Burton do a new type 9 , not cheap but you won't have sleepless nights worrying about it !

If you want to change the engine/gearbox in your 4/4 then you have plenty of options that have been tried and tested. I think the Mazda route is relatively unknown , so you would be in pioneering mode . Great if you have the skills, patience and perseverance, but they are becoming rarer.

The 2 most common routes seem to be:

A Ford Zetec engine 1.8 or 2.0 (plenty of availability, cheap-ish parts, lots of tuning possibilities)

A Vauxhall VVTI 1.8 (several have followed this route, but the originator has now stopped this kind of work for other avenues) Very effective, not quite as easily available) Tim (Hamwich on here) has this conversion. I'll let him give you the story from the horse's mouth.

The crossflow engined 4/4 is no slouch, and may well prove to be enough, the T9 box conversion is a really worthwhile mod as cruising with the 4-speed box is quite tiring at the higher rpm.
