IIRC when my Dad did his IAM training 25 odd years ago, they also advocated using foot brakes over engine/gear braking. Still the same.

Bonus point cheers Dave. So called "Reality" shows and Ant and Dec for good measure they really are sh1te. p.s. The tax thing always bugs me as we spent 12 years as being classed as "ordinarily non resident" and the advantages that implies, spending only short periods in the UK per annum between overseas contracts bought this about.

Paul,
the kids today are taught to use their brakes, not change gear and use engine braking. It annoys the hell out of me, but it seems we are dinosaurs. I didn't know that and it explains a lot, thank you  I will try to get used to it now, be more tollerant and try not let it annoy me

Brake first then change to a lower gear has long been a core concept of the System of Car Control in Roadcraft, the Police drivers manual, and adopted by IAM amongst others.
Was once advised by an instructor to use brake lights on a motorway to ward off tailgaters. Didn’t buy into that one.
