Some thoughts:
1. UK electricity consumption has declined from a peak in the early 2000s. Moving *all* current road cars to EV in 1 go would not overcome that peak, and of course EV conversion will still take decades.
2. Home charging is not needed for EVs. So terraced house owners can still run an EV, but they will need to visit a charge station like a petrol station.
3. I see you can get a Pug e208 from a broker for around £25K today. Probably 150 miles real range, or say 100 + reserve. Most folk drive 30-60 a day? And if they can charge at work...
4. What of big ships still spewing CO2? They have the space to add big carbon scrubbers, or even become H-powered! Political will to do that is another matter.
5. What that airliners continue to pour CO2 into the atmosphere? Funny enough just reading the story of Pratt and Whitney engines (fascinating read by the way) - they built a H-powered jet engine in the 50s for the US military. Only problem is you need a great big cylinder for fuel storage, but that might be ok in a flying wing configuration...

I suspect Morgan will use or at least demo some BMW EV tech in a “Plus E” CX chassis within 3 or 4 years. The new iX3 e-motor is meant to be pretty efficient. Plenty of under-bonnet space for a battery pack, motor in the rear. wink

Needless to say I won’t sign this petition. smile

This was reported in Italy as that all ICE cars will be off the road in the UK by 2030. Obviously incorrect however I am sure that this policy will have offshoots that ICE cars will be banned from city centres in a few years. I can see the rise of clubs for petrol heads out in the country with a private roads and secure garages laugh

How on earth are they going to move most of the world's cargo from one side of the world to the other to achieve zero emissions...lets not mention the shipping and aviation industry....I forgot of course their pollution (as yet) isn't counted. Governments are just picking on the easy targets without dealing IMHO with the fundamentals as to how world trade can continue without producing polluting emissions in either the growing, production/conversion process and distribution network.

At a more local level the Government proposed 13 small nuclear generators (Rolls Royce) as part of the energy solution should prove interesting when they come to put them in people's back yards. Electricity generation and battery production are very far from clean and green technology.
regards

The issue of cargo and tourist transportation is a good point but is very much on the radar in the big picture. As for nuclear power stations, there's a whopping great big one in sight of Southwold and Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast and it doesn't seem to have affected house prices particularly.

I like EVs and for most people they will be cleaner and more acceptable as transport than "smelly old petrol and diesel cars". Of course they're not particularly "green" in the way the companies seem to be marketing them, but they do allow more flexible use of fuels.

[PaulV .... I agree with a lot of what you say .... however not point 1

The idea that the sort of energy useage from petroleum (grey line) could be accommodated by 'winding back' the slight recent decine in electricty consumption (orange line) seems optimistic ...... replacing fossil fuels for transport would wipe out our current total electricity generating capacity from all sources more than twice over .... and our electricity is already fully utilised running stuff like industry, hospitals and people's homes, so the required increase in capacity in the short (in the context of major infrastructure projects) timescales seems somewhat challenging scared

Add to that the stated phasing out of natural gas, meaning all that current gas energy useage has to be replaced at the same time, and the energy supply issue looks worryingly difficult

This doesn't take into account the extra energy demand as domestic heating switches from gas to electricity as domestic gas boilers are outlawed and are replaced with heat sink pumps etc all driven by electricity...........

It will be interesting to see how far Stelios's (Easyjet) developing proposition of using existing power stations converted to burn household waste cleanly to produce electricity contributes to dealing with our waste and increase the electricity generation capacity.

JohnHarris .... I know I can go on a bit, but if you get to the last paragraph I get to that point smile

The disparity between our current generation capacity and the overwhelmingly larger energy sources we're committing to eliminating in shorter and shorter timescales looks insurmountable when you factor in the sheer volume of generating capacity and infrastructure that needs planning and building from scratch in short order.

If these targets are to be met then we're looking at draconian restrictions on all facets of our lives that make our recent lockdowns look like party-time .... which means that in reality they're unlikely to be met under any system short of full military dictatorship

No way. Global warming is real and is more important than having diesel and petrol vehicles. As for the cost of them - well we have wall to wall congestion because cars are now too cheap. I see three bedroom boxes with 4 cars parked on the pavement outside - maybe the ban will reduce that problem.

I don't think people are at present really aware of the full implications of a zero emissions economy. Conservatively electricity demand is expected to double by 2050, it cannot be a case of escalating prices being the sole driver down of demand as it affects and disenfranchises the poorest in society the most. Its only a matter of time IMHO before people may be allocated a fixed annual energy budget and have to live within it. The alternative impact of rebuilding our infrastructure is too great to contemplate by comparison.

Continually using price mechanisms to curb demand is not sustainable long term, it doesn't change the behaviour of those who can afford to absorb the increased cost, it affects and disenfranchises the poorer in society. It could lead to civil unrest, rioting and targeting of those more fortunate to absorb the zero emissions economy impacts.....not a world I would want to be a party to. We need an inclusive way forward that does not disadvantage a major part of society that cant afford the necessary changes to achieve zero emissions.
