Hello,

Before I go ahead and take the plunge - I wanted to ask for your opinions/experiences.

My M3W has the MMC stage 1 exhaust, S&S Muscle filter & 569? easy start cams. Several years ago I also removed the cats.
It is louder than standard, does not suffer the pinking & glowing headers of old. I love the crackles & pops/bangs it makes particularly on the over run.

The only part of the exhaust that gets hot and still dis-colors is approx. 22" from the end/exit. This is where the baffle remains. I would like to explore the possibility of actually seeing these pops and bangs as a 'flash' from the exhaust

Has anybody removed this remaining baffle & cats?

Is there any reason why the ECU would struggle with this free flowing arrangement?

I look forward to your comments.

Thanks
Andrew

Andrew, while I can't offer definitive information on the ECU adaptability (I have an unlocked one), I am running the S&S filter and a catless zero baffle custom straight through exhaust with stock cams. During night time runs, I've seen no evidence of exhaust flash, nor has anyone who was driving other vehicles near me reported them. Doesn't mean they're not happening, just that they aren't readily apparent. I'm guessing the exhaust run is too long to allow the flash to occur near the end of the pipe.

I ran my machine a few times with the cat less front pipes only (plus short turn outs to protect the paint) while I was fabricating the current exhaust. Nasty loud when accelerating and occasional 'flash' on the over run. Surprisingly not too loud under light throttle cruise. Then I was on the stock ECU and didn't throw any codes, but again it was just a few runs back/forth into town which is just a few miles each way.

In my youth, running an Olds 442, and later a Boss 302 Mustang, I frequently disconnected and moved aside the full length exhaust from the tubular headers which I had on those vehicles. Besides the wonderful (to me) sound, I got a spectacular light show at night on the over run.

Do you have any photos of your exhaust?

I've posted photos in other threads that show it, but I'll see if I can find a representative one.

Here's a couple of views. 2" pipe to the muffler, 1 7/8" after.

I do have other mufflers (Porter brand) which I will fit sometime soon.

Andrew, I also fitted the MMC stage 1 kit to my 2016 M3W although since sold. It was plenty loud enough for me then with plenty of pops on the overrun. Flexibility was hugely improved as most have noted. From memory there were faint oxidisation signs at the rear of silencers but not indicating hotspots of any significance.

If I had wanted the exhaust system louder still I would have investigated what wadding (if any) was inside silencers by releasing the front end cap after removing the short setscrews. I did have a quick peek inside when first bought but cannot remember what was revealed.

I would be a little wary of being too radical with exhaust mods and standard locked ECU. You may find its pushing the limits of the adaptive mapping.

Steve, no heat shields? Less weight and a very clean look but darn, are those DNA samples left on them? Just kidding :-)

I have some wrap to add (to the mufflers only) as my under 5' wife struggles to avoid the muffler when dismounting. Actually pretty much any first time passenger struggles with the mount/dismount process. I just wear long pants, which do occasionally get a bit warm:)

having burned my knuckles reaching back to make sure the boot lid was secure.... but I doubt there was any DNA left after that

My 4’10” wife needs the shields and i use them to warm my outboard gloved hand on them while driving or sitting at stop lights.
