Hi Steve, Thanks for your response & observations - Love the pictures of your early M3W, has a great look with your driving lamps & custom exhaust. My M3W is also early (very) no 004 in fact. I don't know if my ECU is locked or not - do you know how I can tell?

Richard, Thanks for your response - my want to change it is not really to make it any louder, although if that is a consequence of removing the baffle - thats fine. I really wanted to make the crackles and bangs occasionally visible

I seem to remember reading here that the engine performs better with a little 'back pressure' ?? If I remove the baffle there is no putting it back (for me).

Perhaps I could drill a hole to two leaving the wadding in place.

Any thoughts

If you connect your ECU to Protune it will tell you whether it's is locked or otherwise.

The Stage 1 pipes I had did not have any wadding, rather they had a long conical baffle inside the silencer can with scalloped holes in the wall of the cone so although they are much more free flowing than the standard exhausts they're not actually straight through. Some of the early MMC sports exhausts were I believe straight through and likely were just the current Stage 1 without the baffle. Having heard those early sports pipes in action I wouldn't underestimate just how loud they were...word was that passing Spitfire pilots were complaining about not being able to hear their engines over the racket from the three wheeler.

They also made children cry 😢

Calum - thanks for your response - I will remove the radial allen screws and see what i have. When i shine a light up the exhaust all i can see is a closed diameter approx 80% of the overall id. This could be the bottom of the conical baffle you describe. The sport exhausts I purchased in 2015 - so are probably early types.
I haven't seen any wadding - just picked this up from previous exhaust threads.

Will report what i find.

I'm pretty sure it was your exhausts that I heard back then!

I use mine for the same reason.
