I know that this is a M3W forum, but I have posted pictures of my boardtrack racer bike build before and some of you were interested in it.

Sorry for the length, kind of got carried away... as usual...

Well it's getting a LOT more finished. It should, I've had it for 11 years and now just getting around to finishing it. I'm sure that many of you guys have similar long term projects that have taken the back burner way too long.

I'll start with a couple pics of the raw bike without any finish work.





The above were actually the second version of the tanks. The first used Harley style Fat Bob 5 gallon tanks that looked great from the profile, but horrible from a front view. So I too them off and started to build my own.

So about three weeks ago I got it ready for paint. I had a local automotive paint supply company mix my color for me and then they injected the mixed paint into spray cans. I would not do this for a larger paint project, but for a motorcycle with such small panels, it worked GREAT for me. Didn't have to get my Binks M-1 out and mix and clean up any paint, just point and spray the cans. I used 2K diamond gloss 2-part urethane clear. It comes in a spray can as well, but you push a button up in the bottom of the can and it breaks the activator bag inside the can and you then mix it together inside the can. They say you have 72 hours to use it, but mine is still not hard in the cans now for three weeks, but soon I'm guessing.

I used twin 1/8" black pin stripes over the base color. Once hit with clear, they're permanently covered in clear. The same with the tank decals I had made up for me. The oil tank also have the logo on it. The bike frame, frontend and wheels were purchased from Milwaukee Iron in Lynchburg VA just prior to their going out of business, back in early '09. The tank font is similar to their sign at their factory, but I did a bit more to it and had a local graphics design company make them for me. They are all cleared over as well.









The running board mounting was all home brewed in my garage. The brake pedal and all its mounting is all scratch built by me.

The shift lever side was also all done by me. I have a local guy that's great with chroming and has excellent turnaround times. Like the last bunch of chrome work he did, I got it back in three days!!! The Harley guys will notice that the shift linkage is NOT over the top of the primary, but now located down and under the belt drive hidden away. Also on the bottom of the belt drive, I incorporated the rear running board mount with the voltage regulator mount. This way it's out of the way, but still getting air to keep cool.







Not only did I have to make the gas tanks, which hold a combined total of 4.2 gallons, I also needed an oil tank, which I fabbed up. I used scrap from work, but it should have been thinner gauge, but you use what's free, right? The tanks are made from hot roll sheet 16 ga steel.

I made the exhaust and had it Jet ceramic coated.

Also need to fab up a battery box. Made this from scrap 10 ga aluminum I had at home.



Chain guard mounting. I bought a cheap swap meet chain guard and it came with two hole in it and it was chrome. I painted it to match and had to use the two holes and incorporate mounts somehow.







The 2" belt drive was polished aluminium, but didn't look right on the bike. So I painted it Harley textured black. The clutch cover and front pulley cover were also polished aluminium, but I had them chromed and they look much better with the black now.



Here's the somewhat finished side profile. Still have the tail light assembly and the mirrors to install. I say install the mirrors as they are my gauges as well as mirrors. The mirrors have LED's beneath the glass and when on, show through the glass. The left one has the speedo, left turn, hi beam and neutral light. The right mirror has the tach, right turn, low oil and low voltage. About 12 wires with each light to get figured out as well. Then there's the three push buttons on each side by the hand controls, so add another 6 wires per handlebar side to wire in. It's all wiring, not electronics like computers etc, so just figure it out and do it I guess.

Thanks! To be honest, it's never been fired up since I bought in late '08. I'm just now getting it all finished. Hopefully once I have a couple hundred miles in it and everything is in good order and all sorted out, it's up for sale. I have a couple projects coming up and the wife said that no money from our retirement or loans for any project that I might want to do. So this is the most obvious choice, finish and sell it. I still have my '76 FLH Shovelhead as back up cash in the bank, so to speak... Never know when another project might come along.

Thanks too Steve. There are sooo many one off little bits on this bike it's a bit scary to think about. But I will say it's turning out quite nicely. I've painted it twice now. The first time it was too blue and didn't look period enough. So I went back the next day and had a lighter slightly grey'ish paint mixed and that's what you see here. The camera does not really show the true color, but when you compare first and second color together, there's tons of difference.

Here's the two, first color on the right and final color on the left. The left is what all of the above pictures are painted. You can tell from this side by side there's a LOT of difference, in a good way.

WOW, what a wonderful project, a feast for the eyes. The colour of it reminds me of a vintage Harley I saw in the transport museum many years ago. If it rides half as good as it looks I suspect you will sell it in a heartbeat should that be your desire.
