Before we talk ourselves into thinking that we have become a 3rd World Nation relying on charity to feed our starving, poverty stricken population, can I remind everyone that most if not all European countries also have Food Bank Organisations,
Although the donation and funding systems may vary, most still rely on volunteers for the distribution and have seen significant increase in demand in recent years.
One of the reasons we are so aware of it, IMHO, is because it is a relatively new phenomenon in the UK whereas it has been well established in other countries for many years.
I'm not arguing that the UK is perfect but I for one am very happy to be British.

Be careful about "taxing the super rich" you would be surprised who they class as rich these days. There was talk in the Sunday papers about a "one off" tax for the rich. The article was talking about rich people paying a 1% tax on assets. Reading deeper that classed someone with assets as over £500,000 as being rich. There must be an awful lot of people in this country that are not rich but have assets (including your home) that equate to more than £500,000. If they start to include pension funds then it really would hit a lot of people who definitely are not "Rich". Terms like rich and poor aren't absolutes, though. You might not consider yourself to be rich, but if you have paid off your mortgage and have a house worth £375k, financial assets (savings, shares etc) of £115k, Possessions (including cars, art, antiques, guitars) worth 80k and a pension pot of 500k then you are very definitely rich as that puts you in the 9th decile of household wealth, ie richer than 80% of the population. Median household wealth (all the above added together) is less than £300k. I think the problem is that many people compare their wealth only in one direction - they look at the comparatively few people they know who are wealthier than them, and don't look at the thousands of people who are considerably less well-off. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...ealthingreatbritain/april2016tomarch2018To someone who has say a million quid's worth of assets, a one-off asset tax of £10k would be uncomfortable but shouldn't be too disastrous. Sell a few guitars, forgo a couple of foreign holidays, don't buy a new car for a couple of years, tell the kids there's no more to come from the bank of mum and dad, stuff like that should cover it I would imagine.

Yes I agree that would include a lot of Morgan owners with that threshold but if it is directed to the people that really need the added income in particular the children I view that as a good thing.
If additional tax on my pensions is the way so be it, us baby boomers can afford it even if many may resent it.
Indeed, and if one doesn't like the idea of the government directing where one's money is spent one is always free to make tax-deductible charitable donations oneself. I'm quite keen on supporting local charitable causes, but I'm not quite in the same league as MacKenzie Scott, who has so far given away $6Bn (10% of the £60Bn she got from Bezos) this year. Wowser.

Absolutely, we Gift Aid our offerings which gives them that bit extra, if everyone does a bit we'll get there we are not all millionares and nor do we need to be, it's a humanity thing not a monetary thing.

Yes Tim, Rees Mog would be really welcome door stepping I expect and re educating the masses, it's a sobering read, I associate Unicef with deprived countries and it seems we have arrived with the aid of Covid. I think we were well on our way before Covid. I'd love JRM to knock on my door It didn't take long for Rich boy to reveal his true colours, what a bottom he is... Jacob Rees-Mogg accuses Unicef of 'playing politics' over UK food campaign. Full story make sure you have a settled stomach first and no offensive weapons within reach..

It shook me to read this... “Britain is one of the world’s richest nations. Unicef, for the first time ever, is now delivering emergency food to children here. “Poverty is a political choice. The Gov’t could end UK child poverty by making the super-rich pay fair taxes. It refuses to.” I quote from the Grauniad " Unicef has pledged a grant of £25,000". Clearly there is a big need! Poverty is not a political choice. Its a mathematical one - the bottom 25% of the population are poor by definition. Poverty is relative. And its not unique to us or indeed any other country . See Italy.. Or FranceNot saying that some kids arent hungry. Or tha tpoverty doesnt exist. If you wish you could flog your plus 8 and give the money to save the children or similar. Meantime you are reading propaganda with the Unicef headline. Britain is not one of the richest. We are in fact the 26th richest measured by PPP GDP/ head. And we give more than £10bn overseas to help others. Including money to UNICEF

Meantime you are reading propaganda with the Unicef headline. I realise other countries have their own poverty but I'm talking about Britain here and what a shock it was to me that Unicef had to step in, you need a fact check on the amount donated £24,000 alone was donated to Plymouth and the distribution centre is a spit away from Princess tupperware yard such is the irony. Far from being propaganda these kids are hungry and we should be ashamed that it is happening in our country I think it's something we should all be ashamed of on a humanitarian level. We do what we can, and I'll sell the Plus 8 if you sell the Fezza Howard.

I'd just rather the taxes I pay go to support those most in need, rather than to some Tory grandee for PPE that they'll never produce, or on an excel spreadsheet.....
