Since 9 years, there have always been minor and major problems with the Elise. In short, it wasn't really much fun any more. But I didn't want to sell it either...and I couldn't do it with the faults. I had made it worse, not better which I hoped to do, when I had a sports manifold and metal catalytic converter built by a workshop five years ago. Now I had two problems without knowing it at first. There were hairline cracks in the aluminium pipe from the supercharger to the intercooler. And the intercooler itself had air leaks. So the measurement always got wrong. In addition, the car's mixture was too lean more so due to the sports manifold and the increased gas flow.
When this was analysed together a fortnight ago. I now have new aluminium pipes, a new and much improved intercooler and a new freely programmable control unit. Then it turned out that the tuning no longer worked because the injectors were too small for the new requirements. So I also got new injectors.
The picture below shows two test runs. The weaker one in red was done after all mechanical faults were fixed. The stronger one is the new tuning and programming on the rolling road test bench with the new control unit and the larger injectors. In addition, the engine now has a wideband lambda sensor and an air pressure gauge in the control unit instead of the mass air flow sensor. The air temperature is now measured after the supercharger. This makes it possible to make better use of the power without danger. I first had to get used to the new, incredibly direct throttle response. Pulling away also requires a different feel for the foot.
I am very satisfied! The Elise is a car where the engine has to be right. It has never run as silky and smooth with the superchargers as it does now. (I have had the Rotrex supercharger since almost the car was new 13 years ago. It is belt driven via a planet gear and therefore without any turbo lag). And the power is very easy to control in corners. The gain of more torque makes it drive fun. And now she feels reliable too.
The engine is the then comparatively weaker Toyota 1ZZ engine, 136 hp originally instead of 190 hp for the 2ZZ but it has a geometry for slightly more torque at lower revs compared to the 2ZZ. It also has in my case different pistons and connecting rods in comparison to the original 1ZZ engine for lower compression because of the supercharger. All done at Komotec, no connections, I'm just a satisfied customer. We got along again after a disagreement many years ago. Another benefit, because of my patients (or I could say the mix of patients and the interim loss of fun and motivation for this car), she now has only 56.000 km in 13.5 years. I am looking forward for a nice and healthy year 2021 with driving the Elise. But TBH in terms of intimacy, emotional closeness and pure joy the 4/4 keeps second to none. This is no excuse because it is a Morgan forum it is the truth. The 4/4 make fun alround in a sporty way. The Elise is a „mini-supercar“. Of course not a supercar but one which wants to be driven on the track which I will do in spring, preferable the GT F1 course of the Nürburgring which is more safe than the old Ring for me to approach the limits slowly.
