I would be happy to use it in a car but not on a motor bike. It's certainly a risk, but how big? I was very pleased to be in a full face helmet as face slid along a gravelled road in Algeria From memory dad talked about faces where the jaw had slid along the road and partially wore away while also broken jaw. One guy had no jaw left and he used bone from the rest of his body to make a jaw. Dad still talks about how well the joint works based on some technique he used. I remember being hit by a car on my pushbike, learner driver waved though a stop sign by another car that had right of way. I assumed I was protected by the car that had right of way. Slow speed probably 10kph but still hurt. I landed on my head three times cracking the helmet in three places and then on my face. The doctor at the hospital was explaining to some students that while I had lost some skin I had lost just enough jaw bone that the skin could be stretched. For a few years I remember when talking of eating the scar that had formed over the missing bit of jaw would pop in and out of the groove in my chin until the skin stretched more and the scar tissue softened.

Unprotected flesh and bone abrades at 1 inch/second when sliding on tarmac, so the question is, how fast where these people going? I would certainly not go out on a track without a full-face helmet, but my days of riding fast on the road are well behind me. The helmet I wear (Illustrated above) has a rigid Lexan face shield that comes down below my chin. I'm entirely happy that this would provide sufficient protection in the kinds of situations I encounter when out on the bike. One can let fear of an unlikely event prevent enjoyment of an experience.

Cool and cold both, you’d better watch you don’t get caught though, your road tax expired fifty one years ago!

A fine finish to a foul year. Temps above zero and the sun shining so the old Mog took me to the airfield and the plane took me to the sky. Bliss. ![[Linked Image]](https://www.tm-img.com/images/2020/12/31/IMG_0642.jpg)
