The instruments were ordered by the dealer directly from VDO.

The biggest part of the costs for the conversion was the replacement of the instruments (~€ 900).

It's a bit cold in the shop today so I'll update this with the progress so far.
I'm making a mockup in MDF so that any issues (with the CNC files etc) can be sorted before going for the real thing. I'm also looking into fitting a fourth small gauge for oil pressure.
I changed the glove box to give a horizontal hindge line so that when the lid is open it can act as tea tray.
Cheers
John

Hi John07. The new dashboard template and layout looks very good. Can you share a bit more information about how you create the digital template? I am currently restoring my car and next up is the new dashboard. I took a template from the scuttle on a piece of 6mm plywood. Using a copy bit on the handheld router I then tried to create an MDF version (just the outline right now) but it doesn't look half as good.

What software and process did you use?
Regards
Tim

A Morgan sales man told me that the instruments could not be moved in my car, but where there's a will there's a way. rofl

Tim, I do not have a CAD drawing of the whole dashboard, only of the four intricate parts, that is, glove box, heater controls, small gauges and the speedo/tacho. A pattern was made of my old dashboard and the MDF cutout from that pattern. Printouts of the four parts were postioned on the pattern and those parts were then CNC cut. Each time moving the dash to the new position.
The drawings I have are done in Turbocad or I can give them in a .DXF file. PM me if you would like them or for any more info.

Cheers
John

This is already helpful. First it means that I will give the template approach another try. Unfortunately I don't have a bandsaw and spindle sander at hand. I know I need to improve the edge of my plywood copy to achieve a better result on the router table. Secondly I thought I need the entire dashboard as CAD file. Good hint to just design and cnc the cut outs. The cut out I am planning ist rather simple and I think I could get this done in TurboCAD.
Sounds like the next couple evenings will be the woodwork shop instead of of the garage 👍😁

Tim,
If like me you only have metal working tools then one way of sanding wood quickly is to use an angle grinder with a brand new flap wheel and keep that flap wheel just for wood. Works super well. It makes a lot of dust and is best down outside. LoL.
