Looking forward to seeing the finished dash John  Not half as much as I am, I've got a box full of SSL stuff to fit but I want to get the difficult job (woodwork) done first.  Cheers John

I'm now back on the case after having some problems cutting the "performance ply" I had bought for the job so had to wait for some solid wood to be obtained. The wait also gave me time to get my 5 link SSL kit installed. I've cut the dashboard out and I managed to cut the glove box lid out with a small (1.5mm) cutter so that the grain of the wood matches. I'm finishing off the little things like bracing the rear as I have reduced the depth underneath the speedo and tacho to get the wheel as high as possible. Still a long way to go as I can see that getting a good finish on the dash will be fun. A couple of pic of the progress. Lovely dash .... you can already see how the figuring will pop out when it gets it's finish coat .... what are you going to use to polish/seal it?

Looks fantastic, John. The difference between CNC and handmade version is significant (I am too ashamed now to post a picture of my version).
I would also like to know how you polish and seal it. Keep us posted please.

K Yes, I thought it was going to be a bit bland but I am doing some tests on the off cuts to see what finish I think is best. One of the wax finishes looks like it might win. Here's a pic of the tests. I would probably go for lacquer in an open car, and it looks nice.

On our dining table I used a wax I got from a carpenter some years! I protects the tabe like lacquer!
Even red wine wine or oil can be wiped off without problems (after some time).
2005 4/4 1800ccm Duratec and a lot of HONDA CX500.......

Nice job. Treatex is available in Matt, satin and gloss. Really easy to apply, durable and very easy to touch up should any scratches appear at any point.
Alternatively, for a super high gloss finish we used to send woodwork to our coffin maker who spray lacquered it.

I would probably go for lacquer in an open car, and it looks nice. Yes, I like the look of the lacquer but any gloss finish needs to be applied in a dust free environment and this is difficult in my garage. This will need looking into if I go this route. Nice job. Treatex is available in Matt, satin and gloss. Really easy to apply, durable and very easy to touch up should any scratches appear at any point.
