My mate bought a car back from his insurer after they wrote it off. Classed it as Cat D. He got it repaired, damage was rear end with boot area only damage. He got it repaired significantly cheaper than the insurers quoted cost. His mate/repairer gave him a quote and he offered the insurer a sum taking that into account. They accepted his offer. It was an Escort and in very good condition but age and market value influenced the write off decision. The repair was very good.
The documentation, who, how the repair was done are immensely important to the resale. For that Plus8 it would be interesting to see what answers are given to questions about the history.
“Has the car had any accident damage? “ is one I would ask. The answer would be crucial, especially if the car was known as CatD. Then the haggling would commence!

CAT D means the insurance company doesn't want it repaired at the price a main dealer wants for the labour, because the dealer doesn't want the job.
There are many CAD D cars bought from insurance companies by Main Dealer Mechanics who, in their own time, repair it. CAT D is nothing to do with the safety of a car, it is, in my view, a device used by dealers and insurers to sell more new cars. There is also a large element of the Insurance Estimator not having a substantial knowledge of the car, therefore does not want risk factor of going over budget on repair spend, therefore he/she takes the smart route of calculating the percentage of pay out + resale salvage value. Therefore if the insurer decides to pay out they automatically have to categories the vehicle.

What I'd want to know in the case of an aluminium chassis car, such as an Aero plus 8 is whether the chassis itself suffered any damage. If so, was the chassis replaced ? as I wouldn't want one of these cars with a repaired or straightened chassis at any price.

That sounds reasonable and plausible if it even affects your own car and if you know who repaired it and how. My 2 cent are, after the case was discussed here so intensively, the seller of the Plus 8 has actually only the chance to supplement his ad with the critical information to preserve his reputation or at least partially repair it.

My one encounter with a Cat D repair was on a Saab 9000, bought for £4k at 150k miles: I gave it away 125k miles later, having had £2750 Cat D insurance repair money (main dealer costings) to cover accident damage which was fixed by my tame mechanic for £250. The car wore a jaunty scar on its bonnet after the repair, which enhanced its road-worn appearance.
£1250 cost for 125,000 miles is the best bargain I've ever had (& nobody hurt in the emergency stop :-) )

My youngest has a Cat D Alfa Giulietta. Bought as such, from an Alfa specialist who rebuilt it following a frontal deer strike. Lovely car that drives well and has been no trouble over the past 5 years. (Hope that's not the kiss of death!)
So for me, generally no problem, as long as it's advertised and sold appropriately. As long as you trust the repair/er then it should be a good deal, but that discount will follow through and may well make it harder to sell in the future. This Aero +8 is however a different matter due to it's construction complexity and performance. Caveat Emptor is the name of the game.

I agree if you knowingly purchase a Cat D and both parties are happy it can be a good solution, I am puzzled why this one was not declared as such in the advert and how on earth can it have an agreed value of 85k when the insurer will be in possession of the full facts. So there was two reasons for not being interested in this car and imagine others will arrive at the same conclusion when they call up for an insurance quotation.

Interesting that the owner of the White Aero 8 (still out there) also has this one for sale on the MSCC Classifieds if anyone is looking for one. Nice colour combination, I don't know anything about Roadsters but it seems like a lot of car for that money that isn't even run in..

I see both these are still up for sale. I'm surprised someone wasn't tempted into the Aero 8 though that didn't know the cars history, especially in view of our current thread on Aero prices on the increase in the real non dealer world.
