Howard - relax - that’s totally normal spaniel behavior, our 2 spaniels operated exactly similarly with the exception that squirrels were even bigger enemies - the spaniels calmed down about age 10 we still have 1 aged 16 -still barks at cats and will occasionally chase a squirrel if feeling sprightly!!! Has taught the young Labradors the status of cats and squirrels such that they now do the chasing

Springer Spaniels. Has anyone managed to completely suppress the mad gene? Alfie was our typical lunatic Springer. Our Cocker, Monty, spent his first four years learning from him. Not quite as mad but part way down the road.They are very intelligent dogs. They learn how to control you. Certainly we are failing. At 2 1/2 Max has all the powers of concentration that you might expect of any teenager so he wil;l do what you tell him in the house and in the garden, but anywhere else ;life is all about smells, birds, and cats. Goes absolutely nuts if he sees a cat and I havent a clue what we can do about it. Maybe try encouraging Max to develop other interests. To the dogs... we have 2 siamese cats... we refer to them as Dots, part dog, part cat. They are both lying on the rug in front of the fire.
