One of the most memorable experiences I have had (the others I won't go into) was during our yearly Arctic Warfare training within the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. We used to get airlifted into our areas of operation just before Christmas each year and return 3 months later, it could be quite isolating but the Northern Lights were always spectacular to watch. At first it was quite a surreal and spooky experience as the display built up and then took over the sky accompanied with complete silence, made the freezing night watch a little more acceptable.

SLIGHT CHANCE OF GEOMAGNETIC STORMS: NOAA forecasters say there is a slight chance of minor G1-class geomagnetic storms on Jan 21st when Earth passes through a high-speed stream of solar wind. The gaseous material is flowing ~600 km/s from a Northern hole in the sun's atmosphere.

Can't answer that I'm afraid, I do know he spends hours outside to capture these images. I suspect that there are many tricks of the trade regards exposure times etc that go towards the finished pictures.
