SOLAR WIND STREAM MISSES EARTH: The storm is cancelled. A solar wind stream expected to hit Earth on Jan. 21st, bringing a chance of G1-class geomagnetic storms, apparently missed. It's not surprising; the stream emerged from a Northern hole in the sun's atmosphere. It was not squarely Earth-directed, and probably sailed high above our planet's North Pole, maybe next time?

THE SOLAR WIND HAS ARRIVED: Earth is entering a stream of solar wind flowing from a small hole in the sun's atmosphere. Geomagnetic storms are *not* expected. However, the stream could produce some beautiful auroras around the Arctic Circle?

Graham, can you suggest a book to give a beginners guide to what you're talking about?

I hear the words but have to confess to not really understanding what you're talking about. confused

Definition says: "The solar wind is a stream of charged particles released from the upper atmosphere of the Sun, called the corona." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGLRdAPPnMI

For people like me to understand it better, it's like the sun got haggis and beans for breakfast and farts so hard in our direction that we get to see the gas shock wave burning while touching our atmosphere. laugh2

Hi Bob,
There are a number of books, most rather technical (and expensive where available). I can't really suggest one over another.
Some info might be gleaned from: Radio Propagation Explained, Steve Nichols, G0KYA (presently on special offer from the RSGB bookshop). Mainly to do with radio propagation, but as that is affected by solar activity you'll get some information from it (Might even buy a copy myself smile Update - I'll let you know what I think when it arrives. ).
Otherwise a google search may turn up something. I'll be keeping an eye on 2nd hand bookshops/charity shops when they re-open.

THE SOLAR WIND IS HERE: Earth is inside a stream of solar wind flowing almost 600 km/s. First contact on Jan. 25th produced an unexpected G1-class geomagnetic storm, Storm conditions are subsiding now However, Arctic auroras are still possible (even likely) on Jan. 26th as the solar wind continues to blow.

This site might help a bit Bob: https://www.spaceweather.com/ without buying a book! smile
