Yes, I've bought a number of books from them over the years Jon.
But, it's nice to browse real 2nd hand book shops, too! smile

Thanks Graham, That does help and I think I'll pin it and have a look at it from time to time.

What I haven't got my head round yet is the Solar Wind. Is it actually wind or is it in fact just a stream of photons or some such.

A 600 km/s is rather off the Beaufort Scale so I suspect it's not wind as we know it.

So question, what is Solar Wind ? thinking

BREEZY WITH A CHANCE OF AURORAS: For the third day in a row, a stream of solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field. Since it arrived on Jan. 25th, the ~500 km/s stream has sparked some awesome and extremely pink auroras around the Arctic Circle. More polar auroras are possible tonight, but the lights should decline after that as Earth begins to exit the stream.

THE NEXT STREAM OF SOLAR WIND: A stream of solar wind is approaching Earth. Estimated time of arrival: Feb. 2nd. Flowing from a Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere, the stream could spark bright auroras around the Arctic Circle.

Probably a bit far north for you K.

Bob, book I mentioned has a whole chapter on Solar Conditions (well, it should, seeing how they affect the radio spectrum). I'll speed read it to see whether it will answer your questions, however just the beginning of the chapter should help. I'll post a link later.

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: NOAA forecasters say that a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm is possible on Feb. 1st when a solar wind stream hits Earth's magnetic field. The gaseous material is flowing from a Southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. Solar wind speeds could jump to 600+ km/s when the stream arrives, sparking bright Arctic auroras.

Monday night Keith, you may see something.
